Peggy was born on September 9, 1943, in Ostrowo, Wartheland, Germany. Peggy, her mother and father, and three brothers later resettled in Straubing, Germany, a small Bavarian town on the Danube River, where Peggy received her educational training at an Ursuline academy. Upon graduation, Peggy moved to Stuttgart, Germany to work as an English translator and international telephone operator.
Peggy met Jim Daigle, a Captain in the U.S. Seventh Army, at a Christmas Eve celebration in Stuttgart in 1966. At the time, neither knew that their first dance would be the beginning of a lifetime together. Peggy and Jim married in Straubing in 1967, and she moved with him to New Orleans where they started a family of their own.
Despite moving to the United States with her husband, Peggy never lost her connection to her family and friends in Germany. Peggy, Jim and their two sons spent their summer vacations at Peggy’s mother’s home in Straubing from where they travelled extensively throughout Europe and enjoyed Straubing’s annual Gäubodenvolksfest festival.
Peggy was a kind and gentle lady, and she loved her family and friends dearly. She became an excellent cook over the years, even learning to cook Creole and Cajun cuisine, among others. Christmas time at the Daigle home always included a unique blend of German, Creole and Cajun dishes paired with German Christmas music and shared with family.
Peggy was a member of the German Church at St. Matthew’s on Carrolton Avenue, and she and Jim enjoyed various events at the Deutsches Haus and Metairie Country Club. Peggy and Jim also enjoyed travelling together in North America and the Caribbean, Europe and North Africa.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margarete Paper, and her brothers, Rudi Paper and Erich Paper. She is survived by her husband, Jim; their two sons, Jim, Jr. and Christian (Stacy); grandsons Erich and Thomas; and brother Dieter Paper as well as in-laws, nephews and nieces in both Germany and the United States.
Peggy’s funeral was held on Thursday, March 4, 2021, in a private, family ceremony at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, but her spirit will always be with her family and friends.
