MILLER, M.D. MARJORIE T. KISTER died at home on December 13, 2018. She married William Charles Miller, M.D. on December 1, 1944. Marjorie is survived by eight children: Katherine M. Schupp Determan, Esq.; May Mathilde Barr (Gregory); William Charles Miller, Jr., MPH, MD (Becky); Margaret Ann Miller, MD, MPH; Cynthia Yeates (Z. Ames); Winifred Sheets (John); Steven Miller (Helen) and Michael Peter Miller (Linda). Marjorie is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Katherine Schupp Zeringue; Geoff and Mathilde Barr; Rebecca Kirov, Abigail and William Miller; Zeno and Winifred Yeates; Jennifer Prewitt Sheets, Jonathan Parker Sheets and William Charles Sheets; Ellen and Elizabeth Miller; and Lily, Peter and Jack Miller. She had one great grandson, Alex Kirov. Marjorie was the only child of the late Ignatius E. Kister and Katherine Prewitt Hess.
Marjorie attended Sophie Wright High School and in her senior year served as Student Body President. She attended Newcomb College (B.A 1940). While at Newcomb she served as a member of the Student Council and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, the Glee Club, the Operetta, and played field hockey in her freshman year. She attended Tulane University Medical School (M.D. 1944) and was one of three women to graduate in her class. While in medical school she was a member of Alpha Epsilon Iota. Marjorie and Charlie were married at the conclusion of medical school and her hand was given in marriage by Dr. Rudolph Matas who also brought her into this world as her mother’s attending physician on August 15, 1920. Marjorie began her medical career as in Intern in Pediatrics at Charity Hospital and was later an Admitting Physician. She and Charlie briefly left New Orleans as he was commissioned by the United States Army and was assigned to the Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. She maintained a private practice in pediatrics until her fifth child arrived. Nothing mattered more to her than her children and she drove countless carpools, loved to plan their birthday parties and attend their sporting events. She was active in the Touro Women’s Auxiliary and supportive of Charlie’s involvement with the Orleans Parish Medical Society, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Southwestern Conference of the American Medical Association, and Touro Infirmary. Marjorie attended the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and earned an MPH in 1978. She then worked part time for the City of New Orleans as a pediatrician until Charlie retired from his medical practice. Marjorie was an avid reader and was a member of the Book Club at Lambeth House and The Beanies. She played bridge twice weekly, and was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Louisiana Chapter T and a member of the Orleans Club.
A reception will be held in her honor at the Orleans Club on Friday, December 28, 2018 from one o’clock in the afternoon until three p.m. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend and celebrate her wonderful life. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers donations to the Rudolph Matas Library of Tulane University Medical School or the Lambeth House Foundation would be welcomed by the family.
