Mark Wegmann passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, at the age of 60. He was grateful for every day and lived his life with a contagious smile. Mark had a way of making the people around him feel welcomed, included, and important. His Catholic faith was an important part of his life and was reflected in the way he treated others and carried himself each day. Mark was an incredible family man. He was a devoted husband as well as a loving father and sibling. He was an exceptional role model for his children, teaching them by example to love your family, be loyal to your friends, respect others, work hard, and enjoy life.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Caroline Eppling Wegmann and his two sons, John (Jack) Francis Wegmann and William (Will) Joseph Wegmann. He is also survived by his two sisters, Catherine Wegmann Domangue (Lee) and Elizabeth Wegmann (Dave Simpson). He is also survived by his nephews, Brant Domangue (Amy), Beau Domangue, George Syll (Jackie) and nieces, Morgan Domangue, Martine Zavala (Fernando), Stephanie Bordelon (Garrett) and Cameron Sweeting. Also numerous Wegmann and Eppling Family members.
Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Francis Xavier Wegmann, Joyce Marie Caire Wegmann, his sister Joyce (D’ree) Wegmann Syll and brother Francis Xavier Wegmann, Jr. (Twig).
In his professional life he was a Gastroenterologist with Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates (Metro GI). For nearly 20 years, Mark was a member of the East Jefferson General Hospital Medical Staff and served as Chief of Staff in 2014. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center where he also completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship. Early in his career, he enjoyed using his medical knowledge on mission trips to Nicaragua with the Order of Malta.
Mark deeply valued his friendships. He loved the friends he grew up with on Octavia Street and the memories they made growing up in a neighborhood and a home full of love. He cherished his golf buddies, his horse group, his coworkers, his childhood friends, his Jesuit Class of 1983 brothers, his neighbors, and his Tuesday night poker group of more than 30 years. He loved being part of the Jesuit Class of 1983 Turkey Drive, Knights of Columbus, Stuart Hall School community, and Krewe d’Etat.
Mark loved his dogs, his horses, LSU, and traveling. Yet some of his happiest moments could be found right at home, sitting in his front yard after work talking with the neighbors as they passed by. Mark always had an interesting story to tell and had a real gift for connecting with anyone and including everyone in whatever it was he was talking about. That quality extended into his work as well. He had a God-given bedside manner with his patients and a natural ability to make people feel comfortable, cared for, and heard. Mark leaves behind an example of how to live: with gratitude, loyalty, love, respect, and always a smile.
The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses who have cared for him.
A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Jesuit High School’s Chapel of the North American Martyrs on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Visitation will start at 9:30 am with Mass at 12:00 noon.
