On Monday, May 10, 2021, Mary Peter Buchler Smith passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in the house in which she was born. She was preceded in death by her husband, August William Smith, and her two brothers, Conrad August Buchler Jr. and Harold Andrew Buchler.
Mary was the daughter of the late Doretta Vallee Buchler and Conrad August Buchler. Her father was the primary force behind incorporating Westwego as a municipality in 1919 and served as the city’s first mayor before he later served as District Attorney of Jefferson Parish. A lifetime resident of Westwego, Mary was committed to her community and was a longtime supporter of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Doretta Smith Briede (Richard) and Jennifer Smith Willis (Scott); her grandchildren, Doretta “Dorie” Briede DeLucca (Jamie), Allison Briede Badon (Marc), Patrick H. Willis (Marcella), and Mary S. Willis; four great grandchildren, Mary Ryan DeLucca, Claude Badon, Brie DeLucca, and Anderson Badon; as well as nieces and nephews, Harold A. Buchler, Jr. (Beth), Colleen B. Block (Michael), Shelia B. Patterson (Troy), Conrad A. Buchler (Cheri), and Celeste B. Hunt (Matt). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret M. Buchler.
The family would like to thank the following care-givers for their devoted and loving service: Deshon George, Jovanna George, Thelma Hunter, and Creasenia Martin as well as Passages Hospice caregivers Anthony Christina, Starr Atchison and Demetrius Phillips.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 146 Fourth St. in Westwego, on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30AM. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Masses or donations to Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 146 Fourth St., Westwego, LA 70094, are preferred.
