On August 22, 2025, Mary Lyn Hirstius Wagner passed away peacefully, joining the loved ones who went before her. She was 76 years old. Born on August 2, 1949, to George William Hirstius and Angele Faget Hirstius, Mary grew up in her beloved New Orleans. She graduated from Mount Carmel Academy (Class of ’67) and the University of New Orleans (LSUNO, Class of ’71). Mary dedicated over 20 years to teaching in Jefferson Parish public schools and, following her retirement, continued to give back to her community by volunteering at The National WWII Museum and with the UNO Alumni Association.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Stephen Welch Wagner; their son, Stephen William Wagner (Jenny); and cherished grandson, Evan. She is also survived by her siblings, Diann Hirstius and Chet Hirstius; nieces Michelle, Loren, Cristen, Kimberly, and Tayler; her godchild, Leigh Erin; her in-laws; numerous cousins; and many dear friends, including her longtime college friend Marcia Kavanaugh.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Angele; her sister, Doreene Venturella (the late Stephen); her brother, George W. Hirstius II; and a beloved family friend, Marcella “Beth” Lukens.
Mary deeply valued her New Orleans roots and traditions and loved sharing them with family and friends—especially her fondness for City Park, Bayou St. John, and Holy Rosary Church. Her warm smile and generous spirit captivated all who knew her, while her quiet strength and unwavering principles earned the respect of many.
Above all, Mary treasured her family. She is forever loved and will be profoundly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside service on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at All Saints Mausoleum, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (within Metairie Cemetery).
