

Mary Pugh Matthews died on March 16, 2016. She was born on June 22, 1924 in Geneva, Switzerland, where her parents A Franklin Pugh and Lea Callaway Pugh happened to be vacationing at the time. After the death of both of her parents by the time she was 12 years old, she was raised by Mr. And Mrs. Harry McCall of New Orleans. Mary married George B Matthews during World War II after his return from combat on Guadalcanal. George predeceased her in 1976. Since childhood she spent as much time in Highlands NC as possible, where she was an avid hiker, gardener and wildflower enthusiast.
She is survived by her two sons, George B Matthews (Susan) and Douglas P Matthews (Gigi), a daughter in law, Courtee Matthews, six grandchildren, George Matthews (Elizabeth), Merrick Matthews (Alison), Lea Ray (Dave) Liz Matthews (Jose Zuniga) Natalie Cowan (Royce), and Mary Pugh Matthews, her namesake, and seven great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Emma Hill for her loving care of Mary in her final days.
There will be a Memorial Service at noon on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave, with visitation beginning at 11AM. All attendees are invited to a reception at the parish hall following the service.
