Mary Greco Rolfs, age 103, passed away on August 14, 2022, in New Orleans, LA. Born in Tickfaw, LA, she was a graduate of what is now Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA, and was employed as a high school teacher at schools in Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, Orleans, and Jefferson parishes until her retirement in the 1970s.
Though a soft-spoken and gentle lady, Mary was self-reliant and fiercely independent. She lived a full but unpretentious life. In retirement she enjoyed the simple things—chats with neighbors who watched over her and included her in holiday celebrations, crawfish boils, and barbeques; phone conversations with relatives and former colleagues; sewing; and baking her famous rum cakes which she lovingly gave as gifts to family and friends. In later years she enjoyed reminiscing with nieces and nephews about growing up with her eight siblings on the family’s strawberry farm in the tiny village of Tickfaw.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Rolfs; parents John and Carmela Greco; sisters, Louise G. Pigno, Virginia G. Hall, Corinne G. Dell, and Carmela G. Calandro; and brothers, Joseph V. Greco, Cyrus A. Greco, Anthony V. Greco, and Norman A. Greco. She is also survived by four generations of and nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service took place at Lake Lawn Park Cemetery.
