Mary Jacquelyn Fagot Scalco passed away at home on November 2, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer, at the age of 82. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Hubbard and Cecilia Fagot. She was a long time resident of Metairie, Louisiana where she made a home for her family for many years. Mrs. Scalco was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dr. Anthony N. Scalco. She was the dear mother of Deborah Ann Breaux (Gary), Steven Anthony Scalco (Theresa), Mary Beth Scalco (Laurent), and Mark Edward Scalco (Betsy). Mrs. Scalco, affectionately known as Mauzie, was grandmother to Matthew Scalco (Elizabeth), Jeffrey Scalco, Morgan Scalco, and Emily Quern (Kevin); and great grandmother to Arabella Cristina-Scalco and Jacquelyn Rose Quern. She is also survived by her younger brother, Charles Robert Fagot (Sylvia).
Jackie graduated from Dominican High School where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Not long after graduation, she met and married Anthony Scalco. Her life as a mother and homemaker soon followed. She was a talented needle worker whose beautiful creations can be found in her home, and in the homes of family and friends. She was a beloved member of two wonderful groups of women who shared her interest in sewing, and will truly miss her company. Jackie loved and cared for a wide assortment of animals throughout her life. Pets of all kinds were truly loved members of her family. Her dear Lily Rose, a lovely Himalayan cat, survives Jackie and was her and her husband's close companion for 10 years. She rescued strays, brought food to wild ducks and seagulls, cared for a small family of feral kittens, and found homes for those animals that she couldn't keep. She was an avid supporter of organizations that cared for homeless animals.
Mrs. Scalco was an active parishioner of St. Philip Neri Church. She volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister, and kindly brought communion to those who could no longer go to their church. She was devoted to the Blessed Mother, and prayed her rosary daily.
Thank you to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice, especially Teresa, Lacey, Rudy and June, for their care and compassion in Mrs. Scalco's last months.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home Chapel, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
