Mercedes Lamas Canseco

Mercedes Lamas Canseco, affectionately known to all as "Tata," gracefully entered eternal rest on December 4, 2023, at the age of 91, enveloped in the warm embrace and the presence of all her children and grandchildren. She left a legacy of resilience, affection, and culinary delights that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Born on August 25, 1932, in Guantanamo, Cuba, Tata was the daughter of Dolores Ojea and Domingo Lamas, proprietors of Casa Lamas, a well-known neighborhood grocery store. Fueled by her passion for knowledge, she graduated from college and embarked on a rewarding career as a math teacher. Following her father's passing, Tata broke new ground, becoming the first female owner of a grocery store in Guantanamo.

During this transformative period, a dashing vendor frequented her store to sell his goods. Four months later, Tata married this charismatic gentleman, Sinesio Canseco, who swiftly became the love of her life. Their union marked the beginning of a journey filled with love, resilience, and shared dreams.

The couple welcomed four wonderful children into their lives: Mercedes, the late Elisa, Karina, and Sinesio. In search of a better life, Tata and Sinesio courageously left their beloved homeland of Cuba and found a new home in Madrid, Spain. With their modest savings, they invested in a small liquor store to provide for their family. Shortly thereafter they received a visa, allowing them to embark on a new journey in the United States.

Seeking a brighter future for their children, the family established roots in New Orleans, Louisiana. Unfortunately, only months after their arrival, Tata endured the heartbreaking loss of her beloved husband,

Sinesio, to cancer. Tata faced the challenges of single parenthood with unwavering strength. To support her family, she taught herself the art of crafting Cuban Cakes, and soon her kitchen became a haven for natilla-filled, merengue-covered delicacies that attracted clients from far and wide.

Tata's determination and love knew no bounds as she worked tirelessly to ensure her family's well-being. Despite life's hardships, Tata found joy in dancing and savoring cervezas at family gatherings. Her empanadas, croquetas, and flans became legendary, bringing warmth and comfort to the hearts and stomachs of everyone she loved. She took great pride in her role as a mother, celebrating her children's accomplishments and embracing the continued legacy of the family's grocery store business.

Tata was predeceased by her father Domingo Lamas, mother Dolores Ojeda, daughter Elisa, husband Sinesio, and siblings Dolores, Domingo, Manuel, and Angel Lamas. She is survived by her devoted children, Mercedes (William), Karina (Phil), and Sinesio (Michelle).

Tata's loving spirit lives on through her cherished grandchildren: Stacy (Lester), David (Gabriella), Alexis, Katie (Dalton), Sinesio Jr., Kyle, and her great-grandchildren Lucas, Leonardo, Lance, and Marisa.

In celebration of Tata's life, a memorial service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home with 10 a.m. Visitation and 11 a.m. Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to www.stjude.org/donate in Tata's honor.

Mercedes Lamas Canseco, conocida cariñosamente por todos como “Tata”, se elevo el eterno descanso el 4 de diciembre de 2023, a los 91 años de edad, envuelta en el cálido abrazo y la presencia de todos sus hijos y nietos. Dejó un legado de resiliencia, afecto y delicias culinarias que quedará grabado para siempre en los corazones de quienes tuvieron el placer de conocerla.

Nacida el 25 de Agosto, 1932, en Guantánamo, Cuba, Tata era hija de Dolores Ojea y Domingo Lamas, propietarios de Casa Lamas, una bodega del vecindario. Impulsada por su pasión por el conocimiento, se graduó de la universidad y se embarcó en una gratificante carrera como profesora de matemáticas. Tras el fallecimiento de su padre, Tata abrió nuevos caminos al convertirse en la primera mujer propietaria de una bodega en su ciudad natal.

Durante este período transformador, un apuesto comerciante frecuentaba su tienda para vender sus productos. Cuatro meses después, Tata se casó con este carismático caballero, Sinesio Canseco, quien rápidamente se convirtió en el amor de su vida. Su unión marcó el comienzo de un viaje lleno de amor, resiliencia y sueños compartidos.

La pareja dio la bienvenida a sus vidas a cuatro maravillosos hijos deseados: Mercedes, la fallecida Elisa, Karina y Sinesio. En busca de una vida mejor, Tata y Sinesio abandonaron valientemente su amada tierra natal, Cuba, y encontraron un nuevo hogar en Madrid, España. Con sus modestos ahorros, invirtieron en una pequeña licorería para mantener a su familia. Poco después recibieron una visa que les permitió emprender un nuevo viaje en Estados Unidos.

Buscando un futuro mejor para sus hijos, la familia echó raíces en Nueva Orleans, Luisiana. Desafortunadamente, sólo unos meses después de su llegada, Tata soportó la desgarradora pérdida de su amado esposo, Sinesio, a causa del cáncer. Tata enfrentó los desafíos de la paternidad soltera con una fuerza inquebrantable. Para mantener a su familia, aprendió por sí misma el arte de elaborar pasteles cubanos y pronto su cocina se convirtió en un

paraíso para delicias rellenas de natilla y cubiertas de merengue que atraían a clientes de todas partes.

La determinación y el amor de Tata no tuvieron límites mientras trabajaba incansablemente para garantizar el bienestar de su familia. A pesar de las dificultades de la vida, Tata encontraba alegría bailando y saboreando cervezas en las reuniones familiares. Sus empanadas, croquetas y flanes se volvieron legendarios, brindando calidez y consuelo a los corazones y estómagos de todos sus seres queridos. Se sentía muy orgullosa de su papel como madre, celebraba los logros de sus hijos y aceptaba el legado continuo del negocio familiar de supermercados.

Tata fue precedida en la Muerte por su padre Domingo Lamas, su madre Dolores Ojeda, su hija Elisa, su esposo Sinesio y sus hermanos Dolores, Domingo, Manuel y Angel Lamas. Le sobreviven sus devotos hijos, Mercedes (William), Karina (Phil) y Sinesio (Michelle). El espíritu amoroso de Tata sigue vivo a través de sus queridos nietos: Stacy (Lester), David (Gabriella), Alexis, Katie (Dalton), Sinesio Jr., Kyle y sus bisnietos Lucas, Leonardo, Lance y Marisa.

Para celebrar la vida de Tata, se llevará a cabo un servicio conmemorativo el lunes, 11 de diciembre en Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral home con visitación a las 10 a.m. y misa a las 11 a.m.
