

Muriel Evelyn Bonie MacHauer passed away peacefully at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson, Louisiana on January 7, 2026 at the age of 101. She was born in New Orleans on August 2, 1924. Muriel graduated from Eleanor McMain High School in 1941 and Newcomb College in 1945. Muriel worked for Humble Oil and later enjoyed a career in teaching in both the Orleans and Jefferson Parish School systems. She also spent a brief time as a realtor with Gertrude Gardner and Keller Williams. She authored one book, "Lakeview Memories". She had been working on the final edit of her second book, "The Way It Was", just days before her passing. Muriel loved to travel in her leisure time and offered many opportunities for her children and grandchildren and friends to travel with her. She attended many military memorial events both here and abroad in Normandy and other key WWII sites.
She was the beloved wife of her late husband, Judge David H. MacHauer and mother to four children, her late daughter, Bonnie M. Dyer Herberger (Neil), her two sons, Malcolm D. MacHauer (Brittany) and Vernon E. MacHauer (Mary), daughter, Cheryl MacHauer Schexnayder (Brian), and foster daughter, Dale P. Hughes (Teresa "TJ"). She was preceded in death by her sister, Virgilyn Bonie, and brother, Walter C. Bonie (Dianne), survived by her loving brother, Merlin F. Bonie (Jacqueline). Muriel had fourteen grandchildren, the late Matthew Dyer (Melody Restivo), Jennifer Hanvy (John), Michael Dyer (Annette), Daniel Dyer (Renee), Thomas Dyer (Jennifer Melahn), Kelly Brooke MacHauer (John), Harrison Morehouse MacHauer, Rachel M. Rivera (David), Lt. Col. Dennis Muller (Breanna), Wesley Muller (Dana), Mindi Keith (Garrett), Tanner, Adalynn, and Hudson MacHauer. Three step grandchildren, Erin Raiford (Brian), and Bailey and Patrick Schexnayder.
Eighteen great grandchildren, Phoenix Pedrami, Blaise Hanvy, Tristan Dyer, Atlas, Apollo, and Orion Dyer, Julian Howe, Knox Carter, Quinn and Evangeline Keith, Scott and Everett Muller, Anya Rivera, Caitlyn and Taylor Dyer, Heidi and Luke Muller, and Waeleigh MacHauer, and one step great grandchild, Nolan Raiford.
Preceded in death by her parents, Walter Sebastian Bonie and Evelyn Hazel Howell Bonie.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, January 16, 2026 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. The interment will follow the Mass at Greenwood Cemetery.
