Evelyn Murrell Mathes Girault passed away peacefully on Friday, June 25, 2021. Murrell was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin W. Mathes and Isabel Mathes Dossat; her son, Bradford L. Girault; and her brother, Melvin W. Mathes Jr. She was born and grew up in New Orleans where she attended Louise S. McGehee School. In her first year of college, she met and married her husband of 63 years John M. Girault, and they moved to Baton Rouge while John finished college. After graduation, and with two children and one on the way, they returned to New Orleans. Murrell had a skill with arts and crafts which she used to teach to kindergarten children at St. Andrews Episcopal School. Later she became an avid tennis and bridge player. Self-taught at both which she enjoyed playing with her friends at the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club. Often quiet and to herself with her thoughts, she had an unusual wit, and would provide a comeback when least expected always catching you off guard. MiMi, to her grandchildren, was gentle and strong at the same time. Selfless and loving she will be dearly missed by her husband; her children, Ginger Smits (Steve), John M. Girault Jr. (Evelyn), Catherine Duane (Martin), and Renee Girault Branch (Jack); her grandchildren, Sara Neeb (Joshua), John Smits (Emily), Marshall Girault, Sam Girault, Anne Bailey Girault, Miranda Duane, Jack Duane, Isabel Duane (Ashley Paul Records), Martin L. Duane, Kody Girault (Katherine), and Kristen Girault. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Sophie and Kinsley Neeb, Avery Smits, Margret Rose Girault, and Liam Lunsford. Murrell is at peace. Her work is done now, and she has passed that baton to her children and grandchildren. Such an honor. The family would like to thank the awesome Staff at Christwood and Christwood at Your Service for the wonderful loving care they provided Murrell.
