

Myrtis "Jeri" Nims, born on October 28, 1926, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in her home, on Monday, August 5, 2024. A devoted and lifelong Catholic, Jeri's faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She led a life full of energy, passion, and generosity. In 1948, she proudly claimed the title of Jitterbug Champion of Louisiana, a testament to her lively spirit.
Jeri married Bob Nims, and together they shared 47 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in February 2000. Together, they built Lucky Coin Amusement into a thriving business, a reflection of their hard work and dedication.
Throughout her life, Jeri remained deeply involved in her community, giving generously to many charitable organizations in New Orleans. Her philanthropy was felt across the city, with notable contributions including the establishment of the UNO Nims Center Studios, The Robert E. Nims Theatre, the Academy of the Sacred Heart Nims Fine Art Center, The Jeri and Bob Nims Community Center at Audubon Zoo, the rectory at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and the NOCCA Nims Black Box Theatre. In recognition of her impact, Jeri was named New Orleans Woman of the Year in 2002 and 2003.
Jeri was also a major benefactor to the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, Magnolia Community Services, and the National World War II Museum, where The Jeri Nims Soda Shop stands as a tribute to her generosity.
Jeri is survived by her dear nieces and nephews: Dr. J. Steven Picou (Patricia), Lamar Picou (Stacy), Gloria Troia, Darlene Parent, Ron Carazo, Richard Parent, Violet Ann Pfister, and Valerie Evans. Her legacy of kindness, philanthropy, and commitment to her community will be forever remembered and cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Jeri was deeply thankful for the compassionate care and support she received in her later years from Uldean Hawkins, Joyce Scott, Jenny Terry, and Penny Hicks.
Jeri was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. “Bob” Nims; her parents, Steven and Synodie Laiche; her sisters, Betty Parent, Philomena Grismore, Zorie Pfister, and Gladys Picou; and her brother, Charles Laiche.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 1:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 12:30PM. The interment will follow the Mass in Metairie Cemetery.
