Myrtle moved to New Orleans and graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School and attended Newcomb College. She told the story of meeting her husband when he asked her to go to a picture show. Apparently, four months prior while she was still in high school, she walked into a room of college boys with her older brother and he had decided she was “the one”. Myrtle and Theodore Howell Shepard, Jr. enjoyed sixty-four years of marriage together. Their secret…their love for each other and commitment to their marriage vows. They shared many common interests including family, friends, and travel to many conventions and meetings with Ted’s work in the seafood industry.
She is survived by her five children Patricia Anne Litzinger of Houston, TX (spouse, the late Elmer Litzinger) , Barbara Jane Morris (Leonard Morris) of Penhook, VA; Marilyn Howell Schwab (Bill Schwab) of St. Louis MO; Theodore Howell Shepard, III (Edith Kim) of Honolulu, HI, and Susan Elizabeth Zimmermann (Edward Zimmermann) of New Orleans. In addition, are her 10 grandchildren-Debbie, Steve, Dave, John, Jennifer, Amy, Luke, Jeff, Kathryn, Zachary and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her son-in-law, she was predeceased by her grandson Jim Morris. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins are spread around the country. Here in New Orleans she became a member of the Zimmermann family and was grateful for the wonderful care given to her by Betty, Monica, Marie, Rhaelynn, and Sandra along with the staff of Vista Shores Assisted Living Facility.
In addition to her family, the church was an integral part of her life from Napoleon Avenue Presbyterian, to Oak Park and most recently Lakeview Presbyterian. As with all her activities, Myrtle was not only involved but loved to lead and coordinate. She was an ordained elder, clerk of session and served as President of the Women of the Church for the Presbytery of New Orleans and Synod of Louisiana. Those leadership roles continued with the New Orleans Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sprig and Twig Garden Club, the Louisiana Association of Parliamentarians, Lake Terrace Ladies Auxiliary, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and multiple volunteer organizations.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 5914 Canal Blvd. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11:00am. Visitation beginning at 9:00am. Interment will follow the service in Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum.
