Nathalie “Nat” Kussmaul passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on September 30, 1935, in New Orleans, daughter of the late Ben and Lena Voinche. Nat graduated from Dominican High School in 1953 and then attended Garners Secretarial and Business School. She worked for a few local businesses until her marriage to James “Jim” Kussmaul on December 10, 1959. They celebrated 59 happy years together. Nat always put family first. The family moved from New Orleans to Atlanta and back and she worked diligently to make sure that her family established connections in each community. During those early years she was active in organizations such as PTA, Girl Scouts, Altar societies and team parent for multiple sports teams. Later she took up golf with Jim and spent many fond years on the course at Colonial Country Club as well as in the card room with friends. Nat was also a proud member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Her final connection was volunteering with Anvoi Hospice which she took great pride in.
Nat is survived by her cherished sister Antoinette (Voinche) Jesclard, her daughters Kim Sugrue, Linda Smith (George Flynn Smith III), Carol DiMaggio (Duane DiMaggio) and her grandchildren George, Paul, Ryan (Cammie), Reid, Aidan and Lena.
Nat relied heavily on her faith, and her family is at peace knowing she is with all the angels and saints she spoke to regularly. The Kussmaul family wishes to thank Anvoi Hospice and the wonderful caregivers - Phyllis, Lisa, Glory and Shelley who lovingly attended to her in her final months.
A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 4317 Richland Avenue in Metairie. Visitation from 10:30-11:30, Memorial Mass at 11:30. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery No. 1.
