In loving memory of Nicholas Anthony Celona, "Nick," who passed away at the age of 65 at his home in Covington, Louisiana, on Sunday June 7, 2024. Born on July 31, 1958, in Brooklyn, NY, Nick was a proud son of Sicilian heritage, raised by his parents, Nicholas J. Celona and Grace Celona. He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Denise, his beloved daughters, Jennifer and Danielle, his sisters Joanne (Joe) and Valoree (Geoffrey), and his cherished nephews Steven (Trisha) and Michael (Marielisa), niece, Nicole and great nieces Mara and Livia.
Nick’s exuberance for life and his vibrant personality were evident from an early age. Growing up in Brooklyn, he became a local legend, known for his larger-than-life character, his role as an Eagle Scout, and as the host of the legendary annual Fourth of July fireworks shows for his neighborhood. He was charming and had a knack for bringing people together. Nick also had a deep love for food, often sneaking into his parents’ kitchen to steal a piece of fresh mozzarella.
At 18, Nick embarked on a lifelong adventure with the Merchant Marines, finding his true calling with the Seafarers International Union (SIU). His dedication and leadership took him from patrolling in New Orleans to becoming a Port Agent in Piney Point, MD, and then moving to San Francisco, and ultimately rising to Vice President of Government Services at SIU. Along the way he was honored as an honorary Marine, a title he wore with great pride.
Nick’s love for his Italian heritage was a cornerstone of his life. He was deeply involved in Italian communities from New York to New Orleans and San Francisco, and his passion for his roots was contagious. His beloved Calamari Club brothers and his commitment to community and brotherhood were central to who he was. He often said, "Never forget your roots" and "You can take the man out of Brooklyn, but can't take Brooklyn out of the man."
His family was his pride and joy. Nick met his wife, Denise, in New Orleans, and their enduring love story spanned 35 wonderful years. Together, they raised their twin daughters, Jennifer and Danielle, with whom he shared countless adventures, from Chevy Chase style family vacations to watching his daughters fashion shows after shopping trips. Nick’s legendary Sunday sauce and his love for singing Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin filled their home with warmth and joy.
Nick's life was a testament to integrity, charisma, and an unwavering commitment to doing things "his way." He inspired everyone around him to stand up for what is right, to be authentic, and to live life to the fullest. His national anthem was Sinatra's "My Way," a fitting tribute to a man who truly lived on his terms.
Nick's legacy is one of love, laughter, and indomitable spirit. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Denise, his daughters, Jennifer and Danielle, his sisters, Joanne and Valoree, and all who considered him "famiglia". Though he is no longer with us, his stories, his laughter, and his spirit will forever remain in our hearts. As he always said, "Life goes on," so we carry forward his legacy, staying in the race, praying, and keeping our loved ones near and dear. Nick Celona, your memory will be cherished, and your spirit will live on in the many lives you touched.
