

Nickie Marie (Schifani) Schiele, aged 87, died peacefully on 8 July 2015 at home surrounded by loved ones in Kenner, LA after a valiant battle with cancer. Nickie was born 23 April 1928 in Donaldsonville, LA the daughter of Nicholas Schifani and Frances Mistretta Schifani. In 1952, Nickie married the love of her life, Dr. Raymond J. Schiele (COL, US Army, Retired) and embarked on a 32 year adventure as an Army Wife, having moved with her husband and eventually their children 27 times. Previously she had graduated from Louisiana State University and Charity School of Nursing. Over the years, Nickie lovingly spent her time as nurse, Army Wife, mother to 6 children, and later as a hospital volunteer. She was remarkably active in the Catholic Church in the various places she lived, most recently at Divine Mercy Parish in Kenner, LA. As a testament to being an outstanding role model for Catholic mothers and volunteers, the Archdiocese of New Orleans recognized Nickie with the Regina Matrum in 2000 and inducted her into the Order of Saint Louis in 2012. Nickie is survived by her loving husband Raymond; sons Ray, Paul(Angie), Richard (Sandy), and Patrick (Wendy); daughters Mary and Anne; 16 Grandchildren; and, 5 Great-Grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation on Sunday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Monday from 8:00 am until service time.
