

On April 8, 2017, Norris Mary (Murphy) Sartin celebrated her 93rd birthday. On the following evening she passed away quietly at her Metairie home. She grew up in the Carrollton section of New Orleans, and was graduated from Ursuline Academy and Sophie Newcomb College. As an Art major, she was at Newcomb during the height of the Newcomb pottery movement. After graduate studies at Mills College, she returned to New Orleans, where she married the late John Menville Sartin, DDS, with whom she settled in Lakeview.
A talented artist and lover of classical music, literature, and New Orleans history and culture, Mrs. Sartin enriched the lives of her children and community. She served as a volunteer at the Robert Smith Library, as well as at Mercy Hospital, and delivered meals to shut-ins. Her quick wit and melodious laugh brought many a smile to anyone who came into contact with her.
She also served as a Cub Scout den leader and a Girl Scout leader, and was a frequent volunteer at the schools which her children attended. Devoted to her grandchildren, she attended countless baseball games, football games, recitals, and concerts.
She was a devout Catholic who especially loved Latin and church hymns, and she prayed the rosary daily. She was a committed adorer, and read many works on the Catholic faith. She and her late husband also were long-time members of the Bar-None-Saddlelites Square and Round Dance Club.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Menville Sartin, and a son, John Menville Sartin, Jr., esq. She is survived by a son, Barry William Sartin, M.D. (Carol West Sartin, M.D.), and a daughter, Glen Sartin Becker (Thomas E. Becker), and a daughter-in-law, Donette Glynn Sartin. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Mary Ellen Becker Elsmore; Barry William Sartin, Jr., esq. (Yvonne Shall); Elizabeth Claire Becker; George Michael Sartin; and Hillary Caroline Becker, Psy.D. She also is survived by four great-grandchildren: Zachary Arthur Kincaid, Michael Francis Kincaid, Caylee Marie Elsmore, and Barry William Sartin, III.
Services will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m., followed by mass at 11:00 a.m., to be celebrated by Father Kyle Sanders, of St. Philip Neri Church. Interment will follow, in Metairie Cemetery.
