

O’Neill Louis Pollingue, Jr., M.D. died peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. He was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on April 1, 1919, and he grew up on a farm near Port Barre, Louisiana. After graduation from Port Barre High School, he earned a degree from Soule Commercial College, a B.S. from L.S.U. in Baton Rouge, and a doctor of medicine degree from L.S.U. in New Orleans. After an internship at Mercy Hospital he specialized in orthopedic surgery at Charity Hospital. During World War II he was chosen to be the Chief of Orthopedics in the only army orthopedic center in the European Theater.
O’Neill is survived by his only sister, Hazel P. Manion, and his four children, O’Neill III (Lynne), Marie Lucile P. Lathrop (Jim), Barat P. Leefe (Richard), and Michele P. Reed (Kevin), and eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Marie Barat Burguières Pollingue and his parents, O’Neill Sr. and Zula Richard Pollingue and his only two brothers, Karl Sr. and Eugene Pollingue.

A private Funeral Mass was held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Donations may be made in his name to the Academy of the Sacred Heart or Jesuit High School.
