

Oscar Flores, 84, went to be with the Lord on March 23, 2015. Oscar Flores de Madriz was born on October 29, 1930 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He was the youngest son of Amalia and Julio Flores. He enjoyed playing pool and basketball when he was young. He really loved the Holy Week marches in Guatemala. He met Olga Alvarado in school and they were later married and started their family. They eventually moved to New Orleans, LA where Oscar began his career as a bookkeeper at Schwegmann’s Giant Supermarkets. Oscar enjoyed bowling for many years until he was no longer physically able to bowl. He enjoyed spending time working in the yard, singing in the choir at church, watching Mardi Gras parades and rooting for the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans. His kids will always remember him belting out the song “El Rey” by Pedro Vargas. Oscar eventually retired from Schwegmann’s and he and Olga enjoyed many retirement years together. In 2013, Oscar and Olga moved to Houston, TX with their son Oscar and his wife Mimi. He enjoyed their hospitality and companionship and he passed his time watching movies and television shows, playing cards and computer games and keeping in touch with relatives around the world through email and Facebook. Oscar was heartbroken when Olga passed away in December, 2013. Old age eventually overtook Oscar and he passed away in the hospital in Houston, but is now reunited with Olga. Oscar was preceded in death by his father Julio, his mother Amalia, his brothers Julio, Guillermo and Enrique, his sister Miriam and his wife Olga. He is survived by his sister Hilda Penagos, daughter Maria Lucrecia Lazo and her husband Jaime, son Oscar Flores and his wife Mimi, daughter Maria Bruner and her husband Tommy, son Jorge Flores and his wife Tracey, and son (nephew) Luis Alvarado and his wife Marguerite, grandchildren Christina Lazo, Joseph Lazo, Daniel Lazo, Jonathan Lazo, Oscar (Tony) Flores, Linda Flores, Marie (Angelle) Matherne, Jacob Larman, Amelia Flores, Michael Flores, Virginia Flores, Olivia Alvarado and Alexis Alvarado, great grandchildren Payton Lazo and Abigail Flores and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Monday, March 30 at 9:00 am at Lakelawn Metairie Funeral Home with funeral services following at 11:00 am.
