

Peter David Michael Gibbons Burke passed peacefully to his eternal reward in New Orleans, Louisiana on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. He recently celebrated a joyful 80th birthday with family. Born August 16, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana to James Gibbons Burke and Mary Rose Shea Burke, he is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Friedrichs Burke, his children: Peter D. M. Gibbons Burke, Jr. (Darlene), Virginia White (Michael), Mary Shea Burke Strain, Eleanor Lieder (William), and twelve grandchildren; his siblings: Dierdre Provosty (Michel), James Gibbons Burke, Jr. (Karla), Sheela Plater (David), and Sean Burke (Ann). He was preceded in death by his daughter Marguerite Cappel (David). Peter attended New Orleans Academy, Jesuit High School, Isidore Newman and graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School. After a year at Georgetown University he earned a bachelor of arts from Tulane University where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Following service in Korea with the United States Army, he earned a Juris Doctor of Law degree from Tulane University, and became a partner with Phelps, Dunbar, Marks, Claverie & Sims. Later he was a founding partner of Lugenbuhl, Burke, Wheaton, Peck & Rankin. Peter served many years on the Agency Relations Committee of the United Way of Greater New Orleans. He served as an advisor to the Boards of Sara Mayo Hospital and Poydras Home, and as president of his neighborhood association. He was a member of the Stratford Club, Boston Club, Louisiana Club, Southern Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, and carnival associations. He was an avid racing and cruising sailor, an inventor, and author. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 20th at 10:00 am at St. Stephen Catholic Church (Good Shepherd Parish), 1025 Napoleon Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana. Visitation begins at 8:30 am at the church. He will be laid to rest in Metairie Cemetery following the Mass.
