Placid Joseph Tamporello

Placid Joseph Tamporello, lovingly known to all as “P J” or “PawPaw”, age 95 years, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016. Pawpaw was married to his wife, Vauda, (who passed in January of 2015), for 70 years. Loving father of Mary Dunn (the late Wallace Dunn), JoAnn Dornbush (Bill Dornbush), Audra Richard (Pat Richard), Joe Tamporello (JoAnne Gambina), P. J. Tamporello, Jr. (Lori Wild). Grandfather of Randy Kelley, Robert Kelley, Ryan Kelley, Jan Dornbush Mende, Adam Dornbush, Colleen Richard Heinold, Joanna Richard Smyczynski, Monica Tamporello, Gina Tamporello Allen, Jason Tamporello, and Mary Katharine Tamporello Tellier. Also survived by 11 great grandchildren, and a brother, Angelo Tamporello. He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Tamporello, and sisters Linda and Tannie. Mr. Tamporello, a D-Day veteran and Purple Heart recipient was a genuine American Hero who served his country during WWII in the US Army 9th Division. He met his wife, who was his nurse, at Lagarde Hospital, in New Orleans, while spending 2 years there recuperating from his combat injuries. He was a parishioner of St. Christopher Catholic Church in Metairie, LA since 1949. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all who loved and cared for PawPaw over the last few years, especially Deborah Bryant for her loving care during our father’s final days. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 1:00pm. Visitation will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
