Whitman (Wayne). He was beloved “Ol’ Unk” to his Goddaughter and niece, Leigh W. Director (Jeff), nephew Greg Whitman (Allison), and niece, Jaclyn W. Ezzo (Izzy). He was also very proud to be the great-“Ol’ Unk” to Rayleigh, Eli, Benson Claire, Weston, Evvie, and Oliver. He also leaves behind his little cat, Goo.
“Uncle Ray” as many affectionately knew him, was born July 21, 1949 in New Orleans and resided in the Gentilly Woods neighborhood with his family where he attended St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School. He later attended Holy Cross High School. During his high school years his family moved to Metairie, and he resided there until his passing. Ray was most known for being an ardent Catholic; devotion to his faith and his desire for Jesus were the most important details of his life. He was a parishioner of St. Christopher the Martyr and St. Edward the Confessor in Metairie, a long-time member of Center the Jesus the Lord in New Orleans, and an avid member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of New Orleans where he volunteered for many years. In these last few years Ray used his old truck more often to get around, but for most of his life “Uncle Ray” could be spotted cycling on the roads of both the city and suburbs; and if you looked close enough you could see the infamous fanny pack, the must-have accessory that he managed to keep in style for decades! Ray was a lover of coffee, and a complimentary cup was best. He made many dear friends at Rouse’s Supermarket over the years as he enjoyed frequenting their coffee break station. A true Trumpster, Ray will be greatly missed by many and fondly remembered for the unique character that he was.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Edward Catholic Church, 4921 W. Metairie Ave. in Metairie, on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 12 noon. Visitation will precede from 10am till noon, with recitation of the Rosary at 11am. Interment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Masses offered for Ray are greatly appreciated.
