Richard Charles (Dick) Buckman died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 27, 2022. Dick was born in New Orleans on July 24, 1943 to Ben and Martha Buckman. He attended Isidore Newman School, where in 1961, he was captain of the undefeated Newman Greenies state champion basketball team. He was an athlete and a devoted sports fan throughout his life, and he had a special affection for the UNC Tarheels.
Dick earned his undergraduate degree from Tulane University in 1965, and he graduated from Tulane Law School in 1968. Dick had a love-hate relationship with practicing law, and he spent much of his career pursuing a passion for real estate. He was president of Latter & Blum for many years in his early professional life, and following a short return to practicing law, he worked again in real estate after moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1994. Before moving back to New Orleans in 2006, he established and ran the Foundation for the Raleigh-Cary Jewish Federation.
In June 1966, Dick met Kathy Latter, and the two married in 1971; they celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in April. Dick and Kathy raised three children, Brian, Shepard, and Ellen.
Dick was a sculptor, and he loved African art. He meticulously maintained his garden, and he loved any excuse to tinker in his workshop. A devoted supporter of the Jewish community, Dick served as the president of Temple Sinai from 1985 to 1987. As a leader in the New Orleans Jewish Federation led missions to Israel and served as Lemann-Stern advisor. Dick also volunteered at Touro Infirmary with stroke patients.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Leah Buckman Weinstein. He is survived by his wife Kathy, children Brian (Cathy Kolcun), Shepard (Michele), and Ellen; and grandchildren Norah, Connor and Bennett. He is also survived by his constant companion and beloved pet, Hebert.
The family would like to thank Shakkie (Kiki) Shannon for her care and devotion.
A private graveside service was held on August 31 at Hebrew Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to Touro Infirmary or Temple Sinai.
