It is with heavy hearts, yet with lives enriched by her love, that we announce the passing of Rita Dunkenberger McIlwain Murphy on September 21, 2026. Rita was a devoted wife, loving mother, accomplished professional, and extraordinary woman whose strength, compassion, and generosity left a lasting mark on all who knew her.
Born in Memmingen, Germany in 1941, Rita courageously forged her own path to America in 1960. There, she built a life centered on family that connected both homes across the ocean. At a time when women were rarely viewed as leaders, she broke barriers expecting equality and respect from everyone. She exemplified the values of confidence and perseverance in her daily life, while demonstrating that kindness, empathy, and vulnerability are among life’s greatest strengths.
Rita’s generous spirit and deep faith in God extended far beyond her family. Through her volunteer work with St. Michael’s Special School, the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, Crossroads Louisiana, and many other charitable organizations, she dedicated herself to serving others and strengthening her community. She was always ready to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or acts of service. Her devotion to her faith and compassion to her fellow man touched countless lives, and her legacy of service and kindness endures.
Rita’s memory will be forever cherished by her family and friends, and her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; her daughters, Angela (Tim), Susan, and Courtney (JP); her beloved grandchildren, Celeste (Sean), Pearce, and Connor; and brothers, Karl and Heinz; and preceded in death by her mother, Irmgard, and sister, Herta.
A memorial service celebrating Rita’s life will be held on October 3, 2026 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124. Public visitation will be from 9 am to 10 am, followed by a Eucharistic celebration of Mass at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Rita’s name to the Dementia Society of America.
