Robert H. Dowie, 94, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a resident of Kenner passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday January 19, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, John J. Dowie and Jeannette Busch Dowie and his brother John J. Dowie, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Joycelyn Digby Dowie; daughter, Patrice Fiorenza(Ron); son, Tom Dowie(Patti); five grandchildren, Nicole Antoon(Trey), Jessica Dauzat, Ryan Fiorenza, Reed Dowie(Tara) and Robert Dowie. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, William, Caitlyn, Bella, Olivia, Caroline and Brennan.
He grew up on Laurel St. in uptown New Orleans and enjoyed climbing the oaks of Audubon Park, playing in Wisner Park and taking the street car with his brother to fish at Lake Pontchartrain. He graduated from Fortier High School where he lettered in basketball and baseball in 1944. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and was quickly sent to boot camp in San Diego, California. Instead of assigning him to fight in the Pacific, the Navy recruited him to the naval baseball team to serve as their catcher. He toured west coast armed force bases playing baseball and competing for his own base. He was discharged at the end of the war, headed home to New Orleans and married Joycelyn Digby in 1948. Moving to suburban Metairie in 1955 he raised his family in a great neighborhood cul-de- sac. In 1954 he went to work for the Postal Service at the Carrollton branch and later served as a commercial sales representative for the USPS retiring in 1984. He spent his retirement years taking good care of his grandkids, loving to dance, hosting many of holiday meals, crawfish boils and traveling and cruising over North America, Caribbean and Western Europe. He was a lifelong member of the Commercial Athletic Association of New Orleans.
Special thanks to his Donald Ct. and Indiana St. neighbors and the families of the Dowie’s, Fiorenza’s, Klock’s, Bonnette’s, Pfister’s and White’s.
He will be remembered for his good nature, his smile, his dance and his love for his family. Bob, Dad, and Grandpa will be missed greatly.
Also thanks to Nouveau Mark, Attentive Companions, Chateau Living and Hospice Associates.
A Private Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home with interment to follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
