

He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter McGruder Sr. and Dana Dimpire, 5 brothers, Eddie Lewis, Franklin McKinnis Sr., Peter McGruder, Vernon McKinnis, and Vernell McKinnis, and his godmother, Nellie Bennett.
He is survived by one living brother, Donald McKinnis, his 6 children, Don Hewitt (Faye), Robert L. McGruder (Alice), Rhonda L. Adams, Rashanna L. Lawson (Eric), Robert L. McGruder (Camille) and Delone McGruder. He also has 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Robert Lee McGruder Sr. lived life to its fullest. Mr. McGruder was an expert in many crafts, but none shone brighter than his love and passion for music. Whether he was composing, performing, or simply sharing the joy of sound, he brought a depth of soul and artistry that touched everyone around him. Music was not just a skill, it was his language, his legacy, and his gift to the world. His melodies linger in the hearts of those who knew him, a timeless echo of his spirit. McGruder's music added melody and harmony to many lives. When it came to music, he poured his heart and soul into every note and tune he played as he would sing and bring joy to all he encountered.
Of all his many accomplishments he will always be remembered for deep unwavering love for his children. He never missed an opportunity to boast and brag.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Lake Lawn of Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be held from 9 AM – 11 AM with interment to follow at Providence Memorial Park.
