Shinichi was a native of the Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, born on October 25, 1940 and in 1966 became a resident of New Orleans after accepting a position with a Japanese trading company operating via the port of New Orleans.
While attending evening English school, he met his wife, Regina who had recently moved to New Orleans from her hometown of Genoa, Italy and had two sons, David and Mark.
Shinichi started Fuji Imports in 1970, locally manufacturing martial arts apparel and equipment. He quickly gained the respect and admiration of martial arts schools around the country and became known as the beloved “Mr. Fuji”. The dedication to his craft was unmatched, as was his sense of humor.
Shinichi was a long time member of the Japan Club of New Orleans, lead the Perfect Liberty Church of New Orleans and loved the game of golf, which provided physical and mental exercise. He also was a big fan of the Black & Gold, watching Saints games every Sunday during the season.
Regina, after 42 years of marriage, passed away in 2010. Although devastated, Mr. Fuji continued his dedication to the family and business. Six years later, he suffered a stroke. After a year of rehabilitation with uncanny discipline and perseverance, Shinichi returned full time to lead his company.
In 2019, Shinichi found new love and married Margarita in a beautiful sunset, coastal reception in Palos Verdes, California. With the family now expanded, his energy only strengthened with her by his side.
As recently as 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Fuji pivoted his business to making high-grade, comfortable reusable masks, serving the New Orleans and nationwide community.
The family wants to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared of deep, genuine laugh with Mr. Fuji in his lifetime.
A memorial gathering for Shinichi will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124.
