Sybil Joseph, “Jo Jo”, age 87, died peacefully on December 19, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. Sybil was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Leon Jules “L.J” Joseph, MD; her parents, Harry Dan Torrence Monroe and Vivian Kussmann Monroe; as well as a sister, Dawn Monroe, and a brother, Daniel Torrence Monroe. She is survived by her children, Denise Joseph Gordy, Lee Monroe Joseph and Monica Joseph Caldarera, and her grandsons Sam Gordy, Jack Gordy and Chet Caldarera. She was the sister of Carole Monroe Corte (Joe) and Steve Monroe (Anita). She also leaves behind her nephews Jeff, Daniel, Joseph and Henry Monroe, and her nieces Jennifer Cedro, Melanie Hart and Katy Kuntz.
Sybil graduated from the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans Catholic School in Shreveport in 1954, and she received her RN from the Charity School of Nursing in New Orleans in 1957. She had a distinguished career as a Psychiatric Nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital for 32 years. After her retirement, she worked with Alzheimers patients at an East Jefferson outpatient clinic, and did volunteer work in service of others. She was a devout Catholic, and a greeter at her beloved St. Clement of Rome Church for many years.
After Sybil and L.J. married, they moved to Metairie where their children were born and raised. They traveled extensively, and in their beautifully decorated home they entertained and fed scores of extended family and friends at innumerable festive gatherings throughout the years. In addition to her love of travel, art and decorating, Sybil thoroughly enjoyed gardening, crafts, music, TV, dancing, New York City, Broadway musicals, eating out, being with family and friends, and meeting new people. Sybil never met a stranger. She had a unique and uncanny ability to make everyone feel like they were special for who they were. Everyone who met Sybil, even if only one time, never forgot her and how warm and loved she made them feel.
Sincere gratitude to everyone who has expressed their love and who cared for Sybil, especially Loretta, Leslie, Michelle, Brenda, Sandy and Tom.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at St. Clement of Rome located at 4317 Richland Ave., Metairie, LA 70002. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Catholic Mass at 12:00 p.m. which will be officiated by her dear friend and spiritual adviser Fr. Joe Krafft. Interment will be private.
