Capt. Thomas Charles Bryan, 91, of Metairie, passed away peacefully at his home on April 20, 2018. He was the devoted husband of the late Dolores Ellenz Bryan for 52 years. He was preceded by his parents Jeffrey and Fanny, and his sisters, Bette Ham and Jo Brown. He was the loving father of the late Carl Bryan (Gail) and his surviving children, Ellen Bryan Boyhan, Donna Harris (Kim), Jeffrey Bryan, Tommy Bryan (Doris), Jason Bryan, Joyce Charbonnet (John), and 14 grandchildren. He was born in Elba, AL and was a resident of Jefferson Parish since 1957.
He graduated from Elba High School and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, New York. He served as an Officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine and the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of WWII, and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. After 8 years as an executive with Lykes Bros. Steamship Co. he became a member of the Crescent River Port Pilots Association. He served as a River Pilot on the Mississippi River for 34 years and was on the Board of Commissioners. He retired in 1999.
He was a member of the Propeller Club, The Plimsoll Club, and Chateau Golf and Country Club.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 2:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 12 noon. Interment will take place at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
