Timothy B. Souther Jr.

A resident of Metairie, La., for most of his life, Tim was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on Jan. 28, 1930, the only child of Margaret A. Phillips and Timothy B. Souther. She was an English teacher from Lawrence, Kan., and he was a grapefruit farmer, then insurance executive who relocated to Puerto Rico from Boston.

Tim cherished his childhood, growing up on a farm and on the beaches of a tropical island. He had a lifelong love of the sun and water. He was a graduate of Kent School, Kent, Conn. (1948) and Lafayette College, Easton, Penn. (1952).

After graduating from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry, serving as a first lieutenant (stateside) as part of the Korean Conflict before moving to New Orleans to work at Pan American Life Insurance. At Pan American, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Dolores Pfleeger, whom he married on Oct. 22, 1955. After meeting Marilyn, he never considered leaving New Orleans. As he started a family, he also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Tim spoke fondly of his military service and of first learning to drive in a U.S. Army-issued jeep and colorful terms he learned in service, such as "salad wagon," or garbage truck. He worked as a computer programmer for Univac, Ochsner Hospital, and finally the State of Louisiana's Wildlife and Fisheries Department. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of American Legion Post 377 and the NRA. He loved military history and planes, recalling the types that would fly over Puerto Rico when he was a child during WWII. His lineage can be traced to a line of Massachusetts patriots including Nathaniel Bradlee, a member of the Boston Tea Party for whom his father was named.

Tim was a lifelong swimmer, who served as a stroke judge, timer, and member of the Jefferson Community Club Association. He enjoyed listening and dancing to swing, jazz, big band, and Cuban music. He was part of a masters swimming program at Elmwood Fitness Club. He played tennis and liked jogging.

Before he became unable to drive, he enjoyed visiting Winn Dixie daily and going to the bank, where he made special friends. He loved a party and a good conspiracy theory. Later in life, he appreciated sitting on his front porch, enjoying a Miller Lite.

Tim is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children: Timothy Bradlee Souther III (Stella), David Souther (Aimee), and Sharon Truxillo (Jack); grandchildren: Kathryn Souther, Lauren McDonald (Steve), Andrew Souther, Stephen Souther, Cooper Bethea; and great-granddaughter Aaliyah Rose Souther. He was predeceased by his parents and his first grandchild, Timothy “Timmy” David Souther.

The family would like to thank his son, Tim, who lovingly cared for his father for the past year. Visitation will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Monday, July 10, 2023, from 10 a.m. until noon with burial following.
