

Ms. Virgie was born on September 2, 1948 to Anderson and Sallie Ruth Walker in Port Gibson, Mississippi. She earned her RN from Touro Infirmary School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of South Alabama. She was a dedicated and hardworking nurse for many years in areas like the emergency department and ICU amongst others. She was a dedicated parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Orleans. Ms. Virgie enjoyed shopping, baking, traveling, and conversing timelessly with her family and friends. She is described as resilient, caring, kind, loving, well-respected, servant, determined and focused.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anderson and Sallie Ruth Walker, and her grandson, Messiah D. Thompson.
Ms. Virgie is survived by her daughter, Trelane Bell; her son, Michael D. Thompson (Monique P. Thompson); sister, Katie Bernard (Lee Bernard II); grandchildren, Alana Walker, Glenika Thompson, and Mekyah Thompson; her nieces and nephews, Lee Bernard III (Heather Bernard), Jayda Bernard, Noah Bernard, and Leah Bernard; as well as her lifelong companion, David Johnson.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the caregivers, medical staff, family, and friends near and far for your time, presence, cards, phone calls, and various love shown through prayers. Your heart of kindness brought encouragement and comfort at this time of bereavement and celebration. The family is overwhelmingly grateful for your sympathy and memories shared.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ms. Virgie’s services on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, Louisiana 70124. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM until the Memorial Mass at 12:00 PM. Interment to follow at Metairie Cemetery on the same grounds.
