Virginia Frances (Janie) Ziegler Vavasseur departed this life on June 20, 2022 at the age of 88. She was born on March 23, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Milton Vavasseur, Jr.; her parents, Jane Trentacosta Ziegler and Melvin Ziegler; and her aunt, Fran Smith. She is survived by: her sister, Melanie Albertin (Mark Albertin); her two cousins, Dr. Steve Smith (Elizabeth Smith), and Ronnie Bradley (Bill Bradley).
She attended Incarnate Word Grammar School and then attended Holy Angels High School. In the tenth grade, she entered the Marianites, where her strong personality was quickly recognized. At the age of sixteen, she was sent to teach seventy first-graders. At the age of seventeen, another sister became ill, and she was assigned to be the principal of a small school in South Louisiana. She was destined to be in education for the next forty-nine years.
As a Marianite, she worked in the Catholic school system for twenty-five years. After leaving the Marianites, she worked in the Jefferson public school system for twenty-four years. During this time, she held every possible school-related assignment, namely teacher, guidance counselor, disciplinary, assistant principal, principal, and administrator in the Jefferson Parish Central Office. Amidst all of these assignments, she earned a Doctorate in School Administration from the University of New Orleans. All are invited to services on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, LA 70124.
