With broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Walker. Walker Waring Beery passed away on September 4, 2021, after a 2 year battle with pediatric brain cancer. Walker was born on February 18, 2012, in New Orleans to parents Taylor and Angel Beery. Walker is survived by his parents, sister Evelyn, brother McLain, paternal grandparents Don and Anne Beery, maternal grandparents John and Debbie Civils and Donnie and Donna Wood, and a host of other family and friends.
Walker loved the color yellow, Pokémon cards, legos, golf (maybe more driving golf carts) and games of all sorts. Walker’s favorite playing partners were his friends and family, especially his sister Evelyn and brother McLain. Walker attended Trinity Episcopal School where he channeled his limitless energy into dreams of becoming a scientist and cherished moments with friends and teachers. Despite being only 7 years old when he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (a pediatric brain cancer), Walker faced his disease with gratitude, courage and love. Walker’s approach to cancer helped him overcome his fears, maintain his strength through challenging treatments and become an inspiration to all who knew him. Walker’s “FriYay” shirt, Zion Williamson flexes and dance moves brightened otherwise dreary treatment waiting rooms and were favorites of patients and healthcare providers, alike.
In the last year of his life, Walker created a foundation called Kids Join the Fight to provide a cure for pediatric brain cancer and care for families facing this terrible disease. At Walker’s direction, Kids Join the Fight focuses on empowering children to leverage their creative superpowers to raise money for the foundation’s Cure and Care mission. Children in almost every state in the country have followed Walker’s lead, and parents, other foundations and corporations are also backing up these amazing children with donations to Kids Join the Fight.
An Open Air Celebration of Life will be held at the Louisiana Children’s Museum, located at 15 Henry Thomas Drive in New Orleans, at 4:00 pm on September 18, 2021. The family encourages all who knew Walker to attend and to share memories and celebrate Walker’s beautiful life.
In lieu of flowers, Walker’s family asks that guests donate to Kids Join the Fight. The family will be wearing yellow to the Celebration of Life, and invites guests to join in wearing Walker’s favorite color in his honor.
