Walton David Sanchez, 72, passed away at his home on September 25, 2021. He was born in Baton Rouge to Hagler and Bertha (Lully) Sanchez on January 27th, 1949, during a rare snowstorm. He was their second son, following Gayle M. Sanchez, his lifelong pal, who called him Bubba—a nickname he was never able to outgrow. His early years were mostly spent on one playing field or another. At Broadmoor High in Baton Rouge, he was a standout fullback and homerun hitter. His college years were spent playing fullback at Louisiana Tech. He continued to love sport throughout his life and took up running and tennis after law school. In later years he played golf, a sport he had learned from his father and brother. Through sport he made wonderful, life-long friends. He graduated from LSU law school and began his career in the oil and gas industry. He started at Texaco and later moved to General Crude, then Freeport-McMoRan, and ultimately became a founding partner of LaBay Exploration Co. He often said he had the greatest job in the world because nothing was more exciting than waiting for a well to come in. Through his work, he made many more friends which was his best reward. Bubba was fascinated by nature and an enthusiastic student of several life forms in particular—roses, orchids, mushrooms, bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. He loved sharing with friends his latest fascinating discovery of the brilliance of nature. He was well-loved as a storyteller, agreeing with Mark Twain that truth was not nearly so important as a good story. He is best loved for his modesty, kindness, generosity, and foolishness. Bubba is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jones Sanchez, his son, Jason David Sanchez (Yoko), his brother, Dr. Gayle M. Sanchez (Belinda), his devoted Cavachons, Sammy and Beau, some lovely nieces and nephews, and so many friends. Their support throughout his life and particularly this past year was another blessing. A private service will follow cremation. A memorial celebration of life is to come. A guestbook can be found at www.lakelawnmetairie.com
