

William Mitchell Patrick McKinnon, age 96, passed away on January 12, 2021. William was born March 17, 1924 in Houston, TX to the late William Lane McKinnon and Rosina Phillips McKinnon. Dr. McKinnon was an accomplished General Surgeon, licensed in Louisiana, New York and Texas. He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1952 and went on to his internship at Royal Victoria Hospital in 1953. A year later, he had his residency at Bellevue Hospital and then began working at Queen Hospital Center in 1957 and Maimonides Hospital from 1958-1959. William also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII piloting a B-24.
William held numerous surgical positions in several hospitals and clinics including Flower Fifth Avenue Metropolitan Hospital, Ochsner Clinic/Hospital, Ochsner Breast Cancer Center, LSU Medical Center and Tulane University Cancer Center.
William continued his work in medicine as a member in several organizations including the Southern Surgical Associates. He was a U.S. Public Health Service Research Fellow, Co-Founder of Ochsner Breast Cancer Center, and mentor and teacher at Tulane University. Outside of medicine, he was a devout Catholic and parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Orleans. He enjoyed carpentry, personal computing, cooking, traveling and stamp collecting.
William is survived by his wife of 8 ½ years, Suzanne Otnott McKinnon; his children, William Beall and Stuart James McKinnon, Mary McKinnon Sonier, John Malcolm and Fraser Andrew McKinnon; grandchildren, Liam, Evan, Dylan and Andie McKinnon, Michael Edgar Dewey, Zachary, Jared and Elizabeth McKinnon; a great-grandson, Kevin McKinnon; as well as Walter Lawrence McKinnon Jr., Ruth Ellen McKinnon, George Beall, Frank Beall, Sonia Beall and Mary Beall.
William is preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Beall McKinnon; his son, David Bruce McKinnon; sister, Marian Crafton; brother, Walter Lawrence “Dutch” McKinnon; a grandson, Christopher William Dewey as well as Margaret L. McKinnon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr. Stephen Rowntree, to be held at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70118 on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
