Born in Cuba in 1948, Willy began pursuing the American dream at just 12 years old when his family fled Fidel Castro’s communist regime. Arriving in a new country with a new language, he taught himself English and adapted quickly, laying the foundation for a life defined by grit, humor, and determination.
He was a proud graduate of LSU Medical School and completed his residency at Alton Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He went on to build a long and respected career as an ophthalmologist, serving his patients at Eyecare Associates for over 30 years with both skill and compassion.
Willy’s deep faith and generous spirit also led him to participate in medical mission work, where he provided free eye care in underdeveloped nations - bringing sight and hope to those in need.
Outside of work, he was a man of many passions. He found joy and peace duck hunting and fishing at Little Lake and Shell Beach, where he was a proud member for 40 years. He also had a soft spot for his animals, especially his beloved chickens and loyal dogs, who brought him daily joy and companionship. A true character, Willy never missed a chance to crack a joke or make light of a heavy situation. He was known for his sharp humor, fierce loyalty, and his “say it like it is” attitude. Never one to mince words, but always guided by heart.
He is survived by his children, Brandon Perez, Damien Perez, and Kristen Keller (Beau); his grandchildren, Emile, Brayden, Lily, Parker, and Hadley; his brother in law, Rusty; his devoted wife, Rachel; and many dear friends and extended family in Miami. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cathie Perez; his son, Matthew Perez (survived by Sarah Perez); his brother, Louis Perez; and his beloved parents.
Willy’s legacy is one of strength, honesty, faith, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered—always.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 775 Harrison Ave. New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM with a blessing to begin at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Willy's memory to Magnolia Community Services, 100 Central Ave. Jefferson, LA 70121.
