Dr. Wodajo Welldaregay

Dr. Wodajo Welldaregay- a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated public health educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 in his home surrounded by family and friends. Born on November 7, 1951, in Adwa, Tigray Province, Ethiopia, he was the eldest of seven children born to Mr. Welldaregay Desta and Mrs. Tibey Tessema. He was preceded in death by his brother Samuel Welldaregay, as well as his father and mother.

Dr. Wodajo’s early years were shaped by life on military bases in Adwa and Wukro, where his father served in the Ethiopian military. A gifted and driven student, he completed grades 2 through 5 in just two academic years, setting the tone for a life devoted to excellence in education and public service.

After his family relocated to Dessie following his father’s retirement from the military, he completed his primary and secondary education, attending the esteemed Weizero Siheen High School. He later enrolled at Gonder Public Health College at the age of 17, earning his Bachelor of Science in Public Health in 1971.

Dr. Wodajo’s distinguished career in public health began immediately after graduation. He served in various capacities at health centers across Ethiopia—Teppi, Haik, Dessie, Maichew, and Bati—during a time of great national transformation, including the Ethiopian Revolution. He provided frontline medical support during famines and regional conflicts, including the Ethio-Somali War.

He rose to administrative leadership as Head of Health Departments in Hararghe and Wollo Provinces, overseeing medical responses during critical times and even surviving a 50-day hostage situation during a humanitarian mission in Korem. He earned his Master of Public Health from the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam in 1985.

Transitioning into academia, Dr. Wodajo joined Jimma Health Sciences Institute as a faculty member and later pursued further graduate studies in the United States. He earned both MPH and DrPH degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1999. He then served as a Research Assistant Professor at Tulane before becoming Associate Professor and Chair of Public Health at Dillard University, where he served until his retirement on January 1, 2021.

His personal life was as rich as his professional one. In 1977, while serving as the Head of the Hararghe Regional Health Department, he met a young nurse named Kelemua. Their bond grew over coffee, conversations, and mutual respect. They married in 1978 and were blessed with four children and three grandchildren.

Dr. Wodajo was a man of integrity, humility, and unwavering selflessness. His legacy lives on through the thousands of students he mentored, the communities he served, and the family he deeply loved.

He is survived by his loving wife Kelemua Ayele; their children: Mesaynish, Etsegenet “Chune”, Samson (Christina), and Kidus; grandchildren: Destiny, Azra and Noa; a daughter he raised, Worke, and her two sons, Yonas and Yohanes; his five siblings: Yitbarek, Senayit, Alemayehu, Getachew, and Fikadu; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to honor Dr. Wodajo’s life and legacy will be held on Tuesday May 20, 2025 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Burial will follow at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.

የተወደዱ የዶ/ር ወዳጆ ወልዳረጋይ አጭር የሕይወት ታሪክ።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ ወልዳረጋይ ከአባታቸው ከአቶ ወልዳረጋይ ደስታ፤ ከእናታቸው ከወ/ሮ ትበይ ተሰማ በኢትዮጵያውያን ዘመን አቆጣጠር ጥቅምት ፳፱ ቀን ፲፱፻፵፫ ዓ.ም. (November 7, 1951) በትግራይ ክፍለሀገር በአድዋ ከተማ ከቤተሰቡ ሰባት ልጆች የመጀመሪያው ሆነው ተወለዱ።

አባታቸው የኢትዮጵያ ወታደር ሆነው እያገለገሉ ስለነበር የልጅነት ጊዜአቸውን በአድዋ፤ በወቅሮ የጦር ካምፕ ውስጥ ነበር ያሳለፉት። ከጅምሩ በትምህርታቸው ጎበዝ ስለነበሩ ከ ከሁለተኛ እስከ አምስተኛ ያለለውን ክፍል በሁለት ዓመት እንዳጠናቀቁ ታሪካቸው ይናገራል። በ1960 ዓ.ም ፣አባታቸው ከውትድርና ጡረታ ወጥተው ወደ ደሴ ስለገቡ፣ በደሴ ከተማ የአንደኛ ደረጃና የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርታቸውን በታወቀው የወ/ሮ ስህን ትምህርት ቤት በከፍተኛ ውጤት፣አጠናቀዋል።

ለኮሌጅ ትምህርታቸው አባታቸው ወደ አዲስ አበባ ሲወስዷቸው፤ የ 17 ዓመት ወጣት ነበሩ። ለኮሌጅ አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ አመልክተው፤ የጎንደር የጤና ኮሌጅን መርጠው የኮሌጅ ትምህርታቸውን በጎንደር ሲከታተሉ ቆይተው የመጀመሪያ ዲግሪያቸውን በመስከረም 1971 ዓ.ም. በማህበራዊ የጤና ሳይንስ የባችለርስ ኦፍ ሳይንስ የመጀመሪያ ዲግሪያቸውን በጤና መኮንነት አግኝተዋል። ትምህርታቸውን ፣ እንደጨረሱ ወዲያውኑ ሥራ ጀምረው በተለያየ የኃላፊነት ደረጃ፣በላቀ የሥራ ችሎታ፣ በመላው ኢትዮጵያ እየተዘዋወሩ ሠርተዋል። በዚህ መሠረት፣ ቴፒ፣ኢሉባቡር፣ ሐይቅ፣ማጨውበኢትዮጵያ ድርቅ በተከሰተበትና አብዮት በኢትዮጵያ በፈነዳበት፣ በዛ አስቸጋሪ ግዜ በጤናው ዘርፍ አገልግለዋል።

ከ ጃንወሪ 1977 እስከ ኦክቶበር 1981 ዓ.ም. ድረስ በሐረርጌ ክፍለሀገር የጤና ጥበቃ ሚኒስቴር መምሪያ፤ መጀመሪያ በምክትል የጤና ጥበቃ ኃላፊነት፣ ቀጥሎም በዋና የክፍለ ሀገሩ የጤና ተጠሪ በመሆን በአፍላው የሶማሌና የኢትዮጵያ የጦርነት ወቅት በጤናው ዘርፍ በከፍተኛ ደረጃ አገልግለዋል።

ከኖቬምበር 1981 እስከ ዲሰምበር 1986 .ድረስ በወሎ ክፍለ ሀገር የክፍለ ሀገሩ የጤና ተጠሪ በመሆን ፣እያገለገሉ፣ሰብአዊ አገልግሎት እየሰጡ

፣ በሥራ ላይ ኮረም እያሉ በሕወሀት ታግተው ሃምሳ (50) ቀናት በጫካ ውስጥ ቆይተውል።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ ፣ትምህርታቸውን ቀጥለው፣ በ ማሕበራዊ የጤና ዲግሪ ከ ሮያል ትሮፒካል ኢንስቲቱይት ኦፍ አምስተርዳም ኔዘርላድስ በ ጁን 21 ቀን 1985 በ ማስተር ኦፍ ፐብሊክ ኸልዝ ከተመረቁ በኋላ በወሎ ክፍለሀገር የጤና መምሪያ ኃላፊ ሆነው አገልግሎታቸውን ቀጥለዋል። ።

ከ 1987 ዓ.ም. ጀምሮ የአስተዳደር ሥራቸውን ቀይርው በማስተማር ሥራ ተሰማርተዋል ። በጅማ የጤና ሳይንስ ኢንስቲቱት አሁን የጅማ የጤና ዩንቨርስቲ ውስጥ በማስተማር አገልግለውል። ቀጥሎም በማስተማርና የፋኩልቲ ኃላፊ በመሆን እስከ 1991 ዓ.ም. ድረስ ሰርተዋል።

በ1992 ትምህርታቸውን በመቀጠል ፣ በ ቱሌን ዩንቨርስቲ ስኩል ኦፍ ፑብሊክ ኸልዝ እና ትሮፒካል መድስን፣ ኒው ኦርልይንስ ሉውዚያና በአሜሪካ አገር የ ማስተር ኦፍ ፐብሊክ ኸልዝ እንዲሁም የዶክትር ኦፍ ፐብሊክ ኸልዝ ዲግሪ በማግኘት ትምህርታቸውን በከፍተኛ ደረጃ አጠናቀዋል።

በዚሁ በቱሌን ዩንቨርስቲ ውስጥ በሪሰርች አሲስታንት ፕሮፌሰር ሆነው ለአምስት ዓመታት አገልግለው ነበር። ከ2004 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ በ ፕሮፌሰርነት ዲለርድ ዩንቨርስቲ ስኩል ኦፍ ፐብሊክ ኸልዝ በረዳት ፕሮፈሰርነትና በአሶሸት ፕሮፈሰርነት ከማገልገላቸውም በላይ የ ዲፓርትመንቱ ኃላፊ በመሆን እየሠሩ ጡረታ እስከወጡበት እስከ ጃንወሪ 2021 ዓ.ም.

ድረስ አገልግለዋል።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ ለአገራቸው በኢትዮጵያ፤ እንዲሁም ለአሜሪካን አገር ከፍተኛ የምሁርነት አገልግሎታቸውን በመስጠት ለሁለቱም ሕብረተሰብ ከፍተኛ የሆነ የዜግነት አስተዋጽዖዋቸውን አበርክተዋል። በአገልግሎታቸው ያገልገሏቸው ወገኖች፣የአስተማሯቸው ተማሪዎቻቸው፣ምንግዜም ያስታውሷቸዋል።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ በሐረርጌ ክፍለሀገር እየሠሩ ፣ ወጣቷን በነርስነት ሙያ አዲስ የተመረቁትን ሲስተር ቀለመወርቅ ተሾመን በቡና መጋበዝ፣ የተጀመረውን ግንኙነት ለትዳር አብቅተው በ 1978 ተግብተዋል።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ ከባለቤታቸው ከ ሲስተር ቀለመወርቅ ጋር በጋራ ካፈሯቸው ልጆቻቸው መሳይ ወዳጆ፤ እጸገነት (ጩኒ) ወዳጆ፤ ሳምሶን ወዳጆ፤ ቅዱስ ወዳጆን ፣ወልደው ሦስት የልጅ ልጆችን ዴስቲንን፣እዝራን፣ኖአን አፍርተዋል።

ዶ/ ር ወዳጆ በባለቤታቸው ሲስተር ቀለሟ፣ በልጆቻቸው መሳይ፣ እፀገነት፣ሳምሶን፣ቅዱስ፣በልጅልጆቻቸው፣ በዴስቲኒ፣እዝራ፣ኖአ፣ በአሳደጓት ልጃቸው ወርቄና ልጆቿ ዮናስ እና ዮሃንስ ፣በሕጋዊ ልጃቸው ክርስቲን በወንድሞችና እህቶቻቸው ፣ በይትባረክ፣ በሰናይት፣በአለማየሁ፣በጌታቸው፣ በፈቃዱ በብዙ እንዲሁም በጓደኞቻቸው በፍቅር፣ ይታወሳሉ።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ ፈገግታ የማይለያቸው፤ ሰውን አክባሪ፤ ተጫዋችና ለቤተሰብም ሆነ ለጓደጃ በእጅጉ የሚወደዱ መልካም ሰው ነበሩ።

ዶ/ር ወዳጆ በአደረባቸው ሕመም ምክንያት በህክምና ሲረዱ ቆይተው በተወለዱ በ 73 ዓመታቸው፣በሞት የተለዪትን ወንድማቸውን ሳሙኤልን፣አባታቸውን ፣እናታቸውን ተከትለው፣ ሜይ 13 ቀን 2025 ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ተለይተዋል፡ የዶክተር ወዳጆን ነፍስ እግዚአብሄር ይመርልን።

ሜይ 20 2025 Lake Lawn Funeral Home በክብር በቤተሰብ፣ በጓደኞች ተሸኝተዋል።
