On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Yvelle Josephine Duhon Burdett, loving wife and mother of four children, passed away at the age of 91. Yvelle was born on September 25, 1929 in Kaplan, Louisiana to Olite Meaux Duhon and Sidney Duhon. She moved to New Orleans at the age of 16 to attend Hotel Dieu School of Nursing, where she graduated and spent her entire nursing career at Hotel Dieu Hospital. She began working as an OB/GYN nurse. Then, as Director of Education, she pioneered many programs and processes to advance the practice of nursing at the hospital. Yvelle was extremely proud of her years at Hotel Dieu, but her greatest joy was time spent with family. She met Walter J. Burdett while attending Nursing School, and they were married on September 16, 1949 at St. Joseph Church in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Yvelle was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and affectionately known as Mimi or QM (for Queen Mother). She is survived by her four children, Carla (Jack L. Becker), Walter (Gina Sins Burdett), Cindy (Sheryl Smith), and Cathy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Justin Becker (Kelly), Kevin Becker (Brooke), David Burdett (Nicole), and Kristen Burdett Logsdon (Glenn); and eleven great-grandchildren, Jackson Becker, Mason Becker, Abigail Becker, Connor Becker, Miles Becker, Madison Burdett, Jordan Burdett, Dylan Burdett, Riley Burdett, Hayden Logsdon, and Taylor Logsdon; along with beaucoup loving relatives and friends. While she lived most of her life in the New Orleans area, she never forgot her Cajun roots and remained close with her Cajun cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Walter Burdett (Poppa), her mother, Olite M. Duhon, her father, Sidney Duhon, and her brother, Allen Z. Duhon.
Yvelle enjoyed travelling, taking many road trips and cruises along the way. She was never one to shy away from an adventure. One of her favorite sayings was “what time and where”, when anyone mentioned an outing. She also enjoyed socializing and playing poker with “the ladies”, where what’s for lunch was just as important as the game. At home, her joy extended to numerous rounds of Yahtzee with anyone willing to play. She was known for her love of music, family, and her unfailingly kind and compassionate spirit.
Special thanks for the loving and compassionate care provided by Ashley Harding, and the staff of My Hospice.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 12:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
