

Yvonne DeGruy Ganucheau passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the age of 83. She was born in New Orleans on August 3, 1931 to the late Harold V. and Irma Neyrey DeGruy. Yvonne graduated with honors from Mount Carmel Academy in 1948. There, she received the Apostle of the Word Award in recognition of her outstanding work in the field of Catholic School Journalism while maintaining a high scholastic average. During her time at Mt. Carmel, she performed meritorious work as a newscaster in the High-Lites Program at WNOE in September of 1947. Following graduation, Yvonne attended Hotel Dieu School of Nursing where she graduated first in her class in 1952, and where she met her future husband. Upon graduation, Yvonne married Gilbert F. Ganucheau, her loving husband of 63 years. A full-time mother of seven and registered nurse, Yvonne was the embodiment of hard work, dedication, and selflessness. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren who thought the world of her and whom she loved with all of her heart. She is survived by her loving, devoted and caring husband of 63 years, Gilbert F. Ganucheau, her seven children and their spouses, Yvette Cassara (Andrew), Lynn Waits (Randolph), Cynthia Hill (Stephen), Gilbert Ganucheau Jr. (Sheila), Marcelle Manship (Mark), Thomas Ganucheau (Lisa) and Richard Ganucheau (Jeanne-Marie), her 17 grandchildren Conan Magee (Dana), Jonathan Magee (Ona), Stephanie Hill, Mark Hill, Adam Ganucheau (Brigitte), Rebecca Magee, Jeffrey Ganucheau (Carol), Bianca Waits, Lisa Magee, Elliott Waits, Ross Ganucheau, Elise Ganucheau, Claire Hill, Charlotte Ganucheau, Mary Clare Ganucheau, Bethany Ganucheau, John Ganucheau, and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Constance DeGruy Burkenstock. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Harold DeGruy, Jr. Her life-long love of Jesus through daily prayer, weekly adoration at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Adoration Chapel, and her devotion to the Blessed Mother assures the family that she is in Heaven where they will one day be reunited. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 8:30AM. In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred and / or donations to St. Joseph Abbey.
