Yvonne Laan Viguerie died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on Friday, August 5, 2022. She was 85 years old. Yvonne was born in Wormerveer, Netherlands, on August 24, 1936, to Marie Cornelie and Cyril Raoul Cornelis Laan. Yvonne moved with her family to New Orleans in 1946, after the end of WWII.
She graduated from Metairie Park Country Day School in 1954. She then attended Wellesley College and subsequently graduated from Sophie Newcomb College. Yvonne married the love of her life, Shaun Clovis Viguerie, in 1959, and together they raised seven children, and were married for 43 years until his death in 2002.
Yvonne was known for her devotion to family, her unwavering faith, and her many passions. Yvonne adored her family and was engaged in every aspect of her children’s lives, as well as those of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, through her final days. Her strong Catholic faith sustained her and inspired many. She was a dedicated lay Carmelite and worked tirelessly in this capacity up until her death. Yvonne loved music and was an accomplished pianist and organist. Additionally, she played guitar, accordion, and harmonica. She was the music director, organist and choir leader for over 40 years at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pearlington, MS, and was a member of the St. Louis Cathedral choir. She was also an artist, avid organic gardener, and a lifelong lover of animals – in addition to her dogs and cats, she at times raised chickens, geese, turkeys, and rabbits.
She is preceded by her husband, Shaun Clovis Viguerie, and her son, Stephen Viguerie. She is survived by her children, Patrick Viguerie (Susie), Kathleen White (Terry), Bella Gsell (Gordon), Claire Layrisson (Jean-Paul), Paul Viguerie (Kris), and Brigid Viguerie; her brother, Cyril Laan (Dominique), and her sister, Magtillt Van Thiel. She is the grandmother of 18 and great-grandmother of two.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 444 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10:00AM. The interment will be private.
