
CDR David M. Jenks, U.S. Navy, Ret. 73, of New Port Richey, FL, died peacefully at Mease Dunedin Hospital with his loving family present, Sunday, November 7, 2010, ending his courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 8, 1937 in Jamestown, Ohio, David is preceded in death by his father Max L, mother Mary and brother Richard Jenks. He is survived by his wife, Diana Lynn Jenks of 30 years; three sons, Vince Rother and wife Kelly of Seminole, FL, Michael Roth and wife Lindsay of Orlando, FL, and Alex Jenks and wife Pamela of St. Petersburg, FL; four grandchildren, Casey, Haley, Owen, and Alexander; sister Mary Lee Jenks of Jamestown, Ohio and sister in law Judy Jenks of Urbana, OH and many nieces and nephews.
Commander David M. Jenks, a native of Jamestown, Ohio, is a graduate of Wilmington College, Ohio, where he was a member of the football, cross country and track teams. He attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio and Defense Information School, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Indiana. He was commissioned at Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, in April 1962.
After commissioning, sea assignments included 5 Mediterranean cruises with the 6th Fleet, two Northern European cruises; and he participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis and Apollo 8 mission with the 2nd Fleet in the Atlantic. He served aboard the heavy cruiser CANBERRA, was the Navigator aboard USS MONROVIA and USS SANDOVAL, and served as ship's Maintenance Officer aboard USS INDEPENDENCE. Many shore assignments including assignment to the Joint Staff United States Readiness Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. He completed 22 years of active duty by serving as Commanding Officer of both the Naval Reserve Center, Pacific Grove CA and Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, San Jose, CA.
Throughout his life, David was an active member in numerous organizations that serve our communities such as : Lions Club, American Legion, ELKS Club, and Veterans of Foreign War.
Visitation hours will be at North Meadowlawn Funeral Home on Thursday, November 11 from 6-8pm, with Military Honors at 6pm. The funeral service will be held at Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown, OH on Saturday, November 13th at 11:30am followed by burial at Silver Creek Cemetery.
