He was born to Helen (Kester) and Ernest Hammer. He was the youngest of six siblings – four brothers and one sister – all who have preceded him in death.
Gary grew up in the wide-open beauty of Montana, where his love of nature, the outdoors, and animals began. In the small town of Valier, MT, he was known as “the boy let on the loose.” He channeled that energy into travel and education, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in surveying. This allowed him to spend his professional life outside: exploring, getting to know landscapes all over the country, and building up the world around him.
Gary also built up the lives that he touched. From family, to friends, his congregation, and his wife - he always had a story to tell and a chuckle to share. He married his beautiful wife, Jenny, on January 2nd, 1993, in Denver, Colorado. Throughout their 33 years together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, love for their animals, and partnership. They shared many amazing adventures travelling together and creating lasting memories. Their bond was a constant source of joy and strength.
Gary’s true passion in life came when he found the truth in the Bible and came to know Jehovah God and His hope for the New World to come. He was baptized in Moscow, Idaho on April 11, 1989. From this point on he spent his life in service to Jehovah. He was appointed an elder in 1996 and spent almost 10 years pioneering full time. During his life, he conducted numerous studies, had the privilege of working on many Kingdom building projects, did ministry in unassigned territories, attended several ministry service schools and traveled to South Africa for an International Special Convention in 2009. Gary always said he was the happiest while in the ministry, he knew that this life and all of its problems were only temporary and wanted to tell everyone he met about that same hope.
Gary is survived by his wife Jenny, son Jon, daughter-in-law Robin, grandson Lucien Hammer, brother & sister-in-law Jeff & Mary Decker, sister-in-law Sama Bryarly, and his many nieces and nephews.
‘Just a little while longer’, and we will see Gary again.
“Therefore, we do not give up...while we keep our eyes, not on the things seen, but on the things unseen. for the things seen are temporary, but the things unseen are everlasting.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
