Born February 1, 1927, in Endicott, NY, son of Dennis A. Norton and Florence Norton.
Attended Hooper School in Endwell through eighth grade in 1941, and graduated from
Union-Endicott High School in 1945. He received an Associate Degree in Police Science
from Broome Tech College in 1973, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences from
SUNY Binghamton in 1978.
Bill joined the O. L. Davis Fire Company (Endwell Fire Department) in May 1944 and served
as an Assistant Chief and a life-time member.
Bill served in the NY Army National Guard HH Co. 2nd BN 108 INF., and retired after
20 years as Sergeant First Class E-7.
While in business with his father, learned Masonry and housing construction from
1945 to 1951.
In 1951 he took a job with the Broome County Sheriff's Department and worked as
Communications Officer, Jail Security, Road Patrol Sergeant, SCUBA Rescue Team,
Criminal Investigator and Detective Lieutenant, retiring in 1978.
Music was one of his greatest joys in life. He sang as a member of the Pasco County
Chapter of Barbershop Harmony Society for 26 years. He sang and acted in several
performances at Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Richey Suncoast Theater with the
City Players of Clearwater Florida. Bill was a member of the Community United
Methodist Church and sang as a Soloist in the Church Choir, and in the Jubilee Men's
Chorus.
Bill was a volunteer for The Lighthouse for the Blind in Florida for several years.
Survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty (Silvernail) Norton, two sons William "Billy",
New Port Richey, FL, and Robert (Joanne) of Endwell NY; three grandchildren:
Christy (Scott) Simmons of Clarence NY, Janice Norton, of Endwell NY and Daniel
(Colleen) Norton of Endwell NY. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren:
Mykayla, Lucas and Adaline Simmons, Ava Scoville, Molly and Samuel Norton.
Also survived by sister-in-law Mary Norton of Plattsburgh NY, and many nieces and
nephews.
Bill was predeceased by brothers Dennis O. and Roger (MaryJeanne), and
his sister Emma (Ronald) Letavish.
