James “Tom” Naso, age 82, of New Port Richey, Florida passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 25, 2020. He recently made the move to New Port Richey, Florida from his longtime home in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Tom was born April 6th, 1938.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dominick, his mother, Emilia and his son, Dominick. He is survived by his wife, Carole Gabel-Naso; sons, Matthew Naso and Mark (Carol) Naso; stepdaughter, Rona (Dean) Wynter, stepsons, Scott (Erika) Gabel and Gene Gabel; sister, Ann Marie Naso; brother, Angelo (Bernadette) Naso, grandchildren, Jordan Naso, Kevin Gabel, Isabelle Gabel, Elyse Gabel, Tyler Gabel, Justin Wynter and Madeline Wynter and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was a proud retired ironworker of 65 years with Local 11 of Newark, New Jersey. Before becoming an ironworker, Tom toured with the United States Navy for 4 years where he was part of the first crew on the USS Ranger. Tom was also a member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed playing golf with friends and family.
Grandpa Tom loved being around children especially his grands. He spent many hours babysitting, driving them here or there, having dinner dates and even hanging out with them and their friends as they got older. He always made them laugh with his stories and jokes. Some of his favorite stories were about his days hanging out playing cards at the gin mill waiting for his next job.
Tom was an exceptionally generous person. He would go out of his way to help family and friends. He never said no when he was needed. As his granddaughter Elyse recently wrote, “He always wanted to be the one people depended on and he always was.” Tom will be dearly missed and always in our hearts and minds.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2020 at 2pm at Meadowlawn Funeral Home, 4244 Madison Street, New Port Richey, FL 34652 and a Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
