Royel William Ping, 75, of Hudson, FL, lost his battle and went home on 9/9/2024. He was born on October 9, 1948 to William and Rita Ping. He graduated from Southwestern High School and immediately joined the US Marine Corp serving from 9/6/66-9/5/68, including a tour in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. He proudly served with Mike Company 3rd Platoon, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
He returned home and worked full time at GTE and eventually the Lafayette Police Department from 1/16/1975-6/16/2002 as a patrolman. He was awarded a Merit Award and responded to the first 911 call in Tippecanoe County. Everyone from Firemen to first responders, bailiffs at the courthouse has a story about him while he served as a police officer as he touched so many. He was a member of the VFW, 40-8, and the American Legion. He was loved by his community, as well as friends and family. Everyone seemed to know "Dubber".
He married Linda and eventually moved to their beautiful home on the water in Florida. They spent their retirement doing what they loved: cruising, traveling cross country, fishing and boating. He was happiest when being around others as he could not sit still, and put a smile on everyone's faces. He did life "his way".
He is preceded in death by his parents. Along with his wife, he is survived by his children: Kristine Maier (Carl), Rodney Ping (Anne), Shonna Layher (Mike), and Shane Robinson (Kristen) and grandchildren: Mollie Ping, Austin and Jarrett Maier, Cash Robinson, Chase Layher, and
Hollyn and Anne Hampton Lee. And siblings: Anthony Ping (Dianna), Merita Horath (Bud), and
Jerry Ping (Jan).
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
