Thomas J. Cleary

April 17, 1938November 29, 2019

Thomas J. Cleary, age 81, of New Port Richey, Florida passed away on Friday, November 29, 2019 at his home. Thomas was born April 17, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio to Thomas J. and Mary A. (Hester) Cleary. As the son of proud Irish immigrants, Thomas grew up in a traditional working class neighborhood, and as a young man, delivered newspapers and caddied. He then began working at Cleveland News in the advertising department, where he began an apprenticeship in typesetting and worked there for 35 years. He worked hard providing for his family and demonstrated every day his commitment to giving his family a loving, stable home. He was the best example of how to be a caring husband, father, brother, and friend. Tom spent a lifetime serving others. He was often volunteering at churches and other local organizations. Through his service to others, he demonstrated to everyone who knew him how to live a good life. He enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife and his children, especially trips to Topsail Beach, NC. He was of the Catholic faith, serving as a Eucharist minister and lector, and a proud officer of the Knights of Columbus. Thomas is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Cleary; son, Daniel (Christine Bruno) Cleary, daughter; Bridgett (Kyle) Thompson; brothers, James (Sally) Cleary, Terrance (Jean) Cleary; grandchildren, Siobhan Cleary, Megan Thompson, and Connor Thompson. A gathering of family and friends for Thomas will be held Saturday, December 14, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Meadowlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 4244 Madison Street, New Port Richey, FL 34652. To love and be loved. For all my years, all this guy ever did was love me, care for me, guide me, inspire me. He taught me to be kind and to care for others, especially those less fortunate.

As the son of proud Irish immigrants, he worked hard to provide for all of us, especially my Mom. He showed us love and compassion all of his days as example for how to lead a good life.

I got to spend some quality time with him during the past few months. To remember and celebrate the good times we had.

I will always be thankful and immensely proud of the life this good Irishman lead.

I’ll always be his buddy and he’ll always be mine.

I love you Dad. Sláinte.

Tom welcomed my husband and I into the family with great love and graciousness. He was so hospitable. I remember when he and Barbara came out to visit Cynthia and I. Tom, Warren, and his son Danny all went to play golf at Pebble Beach. My husband just walked around with them. They had such a good time. There was always laughter and fun. I’m sorry I didn’t get to know him better. RIP Tom.

Tom was a dedicated volunteer with the United Way Free Tax Preparation program since 2015. He greeted our clients and helped them get ready to have their tax return prepared, always helpful and cheerful. We will miss him greatly.

I am also fortunate to be a member of the Our Gang group on the west side of Cleveland. We hung out at the playground at Garfield school on West 140th. Tom was one of the older, wiser members. I remember his yellow convertible. He was a great friend!

Tom was a good Knight he was always there for the Council serving as Financial Secretary for years and serving Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in so many ways. I always had a good laugh when he spoke his mind, he never minced words and always told the truth. He was my friend and always will be.

We were good friends with Tom for over 65 years. He was part of what we affectionately called "Our Gang".

He used to drive the Gang around in his spiffy Ford. All we had to do was toss in a little gas money.

Our sincere condolences to Barb and her family.

Tom will be missed!.
