  We share with you the loss of a dear friend with lifelong relationship commencing his freshman year at college and continuing to his passing with many enjoyable trips to Vermont, Utah and down  the Rhine . Uncle Sam was an absolute joy to be around. He carried such a gentle, light-hearted energy and always took a sincere interest in the people he loved. He was endlessly curious about our lives, always asking how we were and what we were up to, and he made everyone feel seen and cared for.

Even though many of our conversations were over video calls, his warmth traveled effortlessly through the screen. His affectionate smile, his kindness, and his genuine presence were always felt. One of my most treasured memories is the time my sisters, brother-in-law, and niece finally met him and Tita Marylou in London and spent about 2 days together—being with him was refreshing, joyful, and full of laughter.

Uncle Sam brought light wherever he went, and that light will stay with us always. He will be truly and deeply missed.

Many years ago I noticed this beautiful framed sampler on the wall of Sam’s cottage in Millbrook after we returned from a round of golf where in we both played poorly but we acknowledged that we had a great time nonetheless. 

He had intended to acquire a different piece at an auction many years back in Philadelphia but saw this instead on offer, the simplicity and purity of spirit of the message from such a young girl of merely 12 years of age is what caught his eye. 

“While rosy cheeks thy bloom confess
And youth thy bosom warms
Let virtue guide and knowledge dress
Thy mind with brighter charms”

Thanks for the lesson Sam, hadn’t seen you in a while but you always did dress your mind and heart with brighter charms. Rest in Peace good sir will do my best to follow your steed.

Emily and I are most saddened to hear of Sam's passing. He was an exemplary individual. I first met Sam at the University Club's Club Table over lunch and enjoyed his company. Later we co- chaired the Club's "Boone and Crockett" Committee to organize semi-annual hikes for our fellow members. Sam was an expert hiker. He chose the routes, offered guidance and made everyone feel comfortable along the way leaving a lasting impression. Our friendship extended over many years alongside Mary Lou, sharing weekends at each other's homes, dinners and luncheons, stimulating conversation, camaraderie and bonhomie. We always looked forward to get-togethers with Sam and May Lou. We will miss him dearly.

Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to you and your family at this incredibly difficult time. Sam had such a presence and was so full of life. He used to always look forward to his next adventures, we were very lucky to meet him on one such trip!  How could we ever forget meeting Sam on a once and a life time adventure to Antarctica, not many people can say that’s how they met! We carried this friendship from the boat to the skis and met up again in Sam’s more familiar ground of Snowbird. I’m glad we got to see you both in London and take you to our favourite Chinese. We will often think of you both.

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of our beloved brother-in-law Sam Gordon. He was more than family by marriage—he was family by heart. His kindness, warmth, and presence will always be remembered, and his love will continue to live on through all of us whose lives he touched especially my daughters Erika Eribelle  Ellayka and even my grandchildren Paloma and Valentin. The  story book with his  voice you gave them will forever be treasured.  Words  can never fully ease the pain of this loss, but we find comfort in the memories we shared and the love he gave so freely. We will miss our video calls with you Brother Sam. 

May  you rest in eternal peace, and may God grant strength, comfort, and healing to the entire family  most especially to his loving Wife Marylou  during this most difficult time. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.  ❤️
