Obituary of Alan R. Bosma
“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Proverbs 24:3-4 Alan R. Bosma passed away on November 20, 2020 after a long and arduous battle with a rare mitochondria disease. Born on December 16, 1956, he was 63 years young and fully lived each day of his life. Born to the late Dick and Marilyn Bosma and raised in Newburgh as the youngest of three, Alan graduated from Castle High School in 1975. He played football, wrestled and loved fishing and the game of golf; but all of those paled in comparison to the affection he had for his high school sweetheart, Julie (Griese) Bosma. Alan and Julie married in June of 1979, and they would spend the next 41 years loving each other unconditionally. They built their family upon a strong foundation with two beautiful daughters, Brandi and Brooke, who describe Alan as the best father and grandfather to his six grandchildren that one could ever hope to have. Well known for his custom work in home building for 45 years, a craft he proudly learned from his father Dick, his accolades were many. Described as a legendary leader by the Southern Indiana Homebuilders Association (SIBA), he was elected and served as president in 1997. He used his term to advocate at the state and federal level for higher education for professionals in homebuilding, remodeling and construction. Through the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB), Alan was a graduate builder, certified graduate remodeler and graduate master builder. Locally, he was a three-time recipient of “Home of the Year” in the SIBA Parade of Homes, named “Remodeler of the Year,” and “Indiana Remodeler of the Year.” Alan built many homes, but he also built strong relationships and an example worthy of following. He volunteered every year in helping to prepare Thanksgiving meals at the Evansville Christian Life Center. He organized a phone bank during the flood of 1997 and volunteered his labor to countless community projects. He lived in the moment, his heart was as big as his laugh and his smile will not soon be forgotten. Alan is survived by his wife of 41 years, Julie Bosma; daughters, Brandi (Matthew) Elpers and Brooke (Chris) Baker; sister, Brenda Hartz, and brother, Steve (Dawn) Bosma. His grandchildren, Ella, Owen, Reid and Alex Elpers and Cooper and Cruz Baker will miss him dearly, as will many nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Marilyn and Dick Bosma and brother-in-law, Leroy Hartz. In adherence to the current pandemic restrictions, a private funeral service will be held to celebrate Alan’s life. Donations in appreciation for the invaluable medical care Alan received and in awareness for mitochondria disease may be made to Cleveland Clinic at http://giving.clevelandclinic.org; and the Linda White Hospice House at https://www.deaconess.com/For-You/Donors-and-Volunteers/Give-Now. In recognition of his volunteerism, memorial contributions may be made to the Evansville Christian Life Center at https://restoringpeople.com/donate/.
