Bill G. Fortson

Bill G. Fortson, 81, of Newburgh, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him. He was born January 16, 1945, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Doris and James Fortson, both of whom preceded him in death.

Bill moved to the Evansville area in 1969 to begin his career with Old National Bank. He quickly distinguished himself in the banking industry and became a Vice President in the Trust Department.

In 1979, Bill followed his entrepreneurial spirit and opened BJ’s Flowers and Gifts in Newburgh, during this time he earned the certification of Master Floral Designer. After many successful years, the business transitioned in 1994 to BJ’s Home Accents, where Bill’s passion for design, decorating and serving his customers helped establish the business as a respected destination in the region. BJ’s Home Accents was recognized numerous times as “Store of the Year” in the specialty store category for the Midwest Region at the ARTs/Dallas Market Center awards ceremony and was ultimately inducted into the ARTs/Dallas Market Center Hall of Fame. Bill was also elected to serve as President of the ARTs (Accessory Resource Team) industry organization.

While Bill was proud of his career and accomplishments, his greatest enjoyment came from the people in his life. He loved traveling and especially cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. He was known for his warmth, generosity, friendship and ability to make the people around him feel welcome.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol (Like) Fortson of Newburgh; his son, Ryan Fortson (Carla) of Elberfeld; his granddaughter, Marissa Fortson (fiancé Thomas Buckler) of Evansville, Mother-in-law Marjorie Like of Newburgh; and a special friend, John Clements of Newburgh.

Bill leaves behind a lifetime of memories, lasting friendships and a family who will forever be grateful for the love, laughter and example he shared with them.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 14, 2026 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261 with Fr. Bernie Etienne officiating. Following the service, burial will be held at Alexander Memorial Park in Evansville. Family and friends may visit Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Alexander Newburgh Chapel.
