Carol Metzger, a woman whose heart and hands were always busy caring for others, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was 74 years old. She was born April 7, 1950 in Evansville to the late Gilbert and Anita (Wise) Enlow.
A 1968 graduate of Tecumseh High School and went on to attend surgical tech school before earning her RN degree from the University of Evansville. She was a supermom before the term was even popular—taking night classes while raising three children with grace and humor. Her career in healthcare began at Welborn Hospital, where she worked in Urology and as an OB/GYN nurse for 18 years. She was Certified in Women's Healthcare, and she truly loved what she did. Carol's mission in life was simple: to help others. Whether it was medical advice, a warm meal, or just a shoulder to lean on, if you needed her, she was there. She became the go-to person for everyone in her life, and she did it all with a kindness and dedication that made her unforgettable.
Carol was married to her devoted husband, William “Mike” for 55 years, and together, they created a bond that was truly unbreakable. They were a team in every sense—traveling the world, making lifelong memories with friends, and enjoying a deeply committed relationship that set an example for everyone who knew them.
After retiring, Carol didn't slow down. She devoted her time to volunteering with SWIRCA (Southwestern Indiana Regional Council on Aging), where she helped enhance the quality of life for seniors, people living with disabilities, and their caregivers. Her compassion never had an off switch. To mix things up she became a general contractor and built several homes for about 5 years.
Carol is survived by her husband, Mike; three daughters, Tina Metzger Powers, Mindy Metzger Fleming and Jodi (Peter) Fehrenbacher; she was the proud grandmother to eight beautiful grandchildren, Hagan and Hazel Powers, Grace, Gavin and Caroline Fleming and Finley, Piper and Lily Fehrenbacher, each of whom adored their "mawmaw" more than words can express.
She was an avid lover of yoga, walking, kayaking, biking, and golfing—whenever she could combine those activities with time spent with family, she was in her element. She loved to travel, whether it was a weekend getaway or an exotic adventure. And yes, she loved her coffee, wine, and gin & tonics—especially when shared with friends and family.
Carol's legacy is one of kindness, love, and unwavering service to others. She may no longer be here in body, but she will always be with us in spirit—whether we’re sipping a G&T, hitting the trails, or simply living with the love she gave so freely.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2024 at St. Clements Catholic Church, 422 E. Sycamore Street, Boonville, IN, officiated by Fr. Jack Durchholz.
